Male dogs fighting, which one to fix?
My ex-granddad in law or whatever has 2 male Rotties that stay inside with him. He is getting on up in years and the dogs have sort of taken charge of him instead of the other way around. Recently, like in the last week, they have started SERIOUS fighting. Ripping ears, flinging blood and having to call someone else to get them pulled apart. They are about 4 and 5 years old and the smaller but older of the 2 is starting it. I went over last night and they both could hardly get up from being so sore and they look like they have been in a knife fight.
It is typical male to male agression but it has never happened before. They would grumble and snap at each other over a toy or something but that was it. Now I worry they are gonna hurt the old guy even if they dont kill each other. Who needs to get fixed? Getting rid of one would be a last resort cause he really loves them. I think they both should get snipped but I have been told that since they are already older that it might not help.

Snipping won't help, they have already developed thier secondary gender charactaristics.
Need to get rid of one of the dogs. |

I would snip them both. Yeah it might not work but it also MAY help.
The problem is that the guy they both thought of as their "Pack leader" is no longer in control and now they are fighting to get that control themselves. Best case would be to separate them if no one can be there to train them and get control again.

I had my 2 that were fighting fixed. Didn't work. They were only 8 months old. They finally decided on a king all on their own.
Have you thought about a shock collar on one or both? |

Tell him to start whoopin' some ass. Seriously. Like GRIDWNC said, their pack leader is gone, and they're both old enough to be fully set in their ways as males, and are trying to take over the pack leader position. He either has to show them both that he is in charge and they are both followers, or he's going to have to seperate them.

Well, this is one of those "what I was expecting to hear, but not what I wanted to hear" type of things.
I worry they are gonna knock him down or accidentally grab him while he is trying to break up a fight.

Get rid of one of both if Ex-Grandpa is getting to old. The need an Alpha and if he can't be it then one of them will be.

one of our Boxers got so terrirtorial and dominent bound that we couldn't even give her away
![]() I mean she would literally attack Holly (oldest) and try to make submit...but Holly was not gonna have that so they would end up in some pretty bangged up fights... went on about a month and after long thoughts and grieving we had Daisy put to sleep...I was not about to give an agressive dog to anyone knowing she was that agressive and have that on my concsience - especially if they had kids - didn't matter Daisy would fight right in front of our 7y/o...and pretty much made him hate her - he would talk about Daisy needing to leave, he didn't feel safe around her and whatnot...etc. getting them fixed is not going to help a thing except breeding

I second the won't work. They are trying to figure out which one is dominant. Who ever needs to express them self more as the Alpha.
That is the only thing that will work.....ask Ceaser(sp)

Might look in to a good trainer. There are ways of handling them to make one of them submisive so the other can take control as the dominant. Might take someone that really knows what they're doing.

That would work if the trainer lived with gramps. ![]() A trainer can work with a dog, but if the owner doesn't know how to, or can't, handle the dog, they'll go back to old habits. I'd try a shock collar on both of them. Gramps hits the button when they get into it. Otherwise, one will probably need to go. |

Unless your damn good at synchronized shocking, I don't see it working, just aggravating a stressful situation.

Do it the old fashioned way
![]() When the dogs are fighting walk up and grab both those fuckers by the ear and twist hard until they collapse on the floor in the prone position. Then nail em in the butt a few times with a rolled up paper. It works and they realize that neither is the alpha after a while.

Seriously though, this is an accident waiting to happen Cary, if he is unable to establish that he is the boss either vocally or physically, he should give them up for adoption. It's unfair to the dogs and it's not safe for anyone.
