1 ton TRE question

I recently installed 1 ton TREs on my Yj the vendor does not matter but for reference it is the same stuff parts mike sells ( It is not Mikes stuff) front axle is a d44 full width from a J20. On a trail ride this weekend the steering was sloppy at best. I found that one of the TREs on the drag link seemed to have some play in it. first I tightened the nut thinking it was loose in the taper. No change and the nut had not come loose, then I had my wife turn the wheel back and forthe and I found that the TRE was loose inside. it would shift inside a quarter inch before actally turning the wheels. I finished the ride and installed a new end. Upon inspection the bad end has no visible signs of wear, it is tight to the hand. only if I press on the top of the taper will it move further into the end like there is a spring compressing in there.

That can't be right??? does anyone know what caused this? over extention.... or is this just a bad joint. It has less than 100 miles on it. maybe 2 hard trail runs and a couple comps in the stock mod class.

I just want to fix it so it does not happen again.

Thanks
Wayne

i think your problem is that you used a tre where you needed a dle.

a very common assumption/missconseption is the a d60/1 ton Tre is different tapper diam, it is NOT. the thread shank is bigger where it connects to the tie rod but the taper dam and pitch are the same as a 10b/d44.

HOWEVER and 1 ton/d60 DRAGLINK end IS a larger taper diam but it is the same pitch.

i ran in to this issue when i bought my high steer arms, i told them i wanted it bored for 1tons stuff and when i got it there was some ???

I use TRE as a generic term for the OEM style rod ends. These are bigger than the 1/2 ton ones MUCH bigger I had to ream the high steer arms and pitman a lot for them to fit they are 2 to 3 times bigger that the half ton ones that were on there. I know I got the right parts the #s were the same as Mikes, the vendor and I are both stumped. as to why there is play in one so soon. It seems spring loaded inside like a king pin only to near as heavy a spring. I have the problem fixed for now but I was hoping sombody had a bit of insight.

What he's trying to tell you is that your arm is reamed for a Drag link and you in fact have a Tie rod end.

I reamed the arm to fit this end, be it drag or tie I don't know. the taper is right and it was tight. there was play in the ball portion of the end that seams to have a spring or something holding it in place that has too much give when put under the stress of steering. I just wondered if anyone had any insight.

I will cut it open to night to see whats up.

Bad end. The body shouldn't move separately from the shaft when under steering. Sounds just like a sloppy, worn-out, old 25 year-old end..it's just shiny new, right?
