Marlin crawler dual case ?

The instructions say from.004-.010 end play on the low speed gear.what does this mean and how do i check it?Thanks for your help!

these gears ? (borrowed from MARLIN site)

Then we check the oil clearance gap between the main 37 tooth (2.28) low range main gear and the end of the main shaft. It should be between .004” and .010”. Ours was .006” so we continued.
