Dana 70 front disc brake pics???

I have used the search, and still not found any good pics or descriptions on how to mount the calipers. The front end we have is a closed knuckle type, and the hub area is approx. 8-10 inches from the only stationary part (knuckle). I am looking for ideas and espesially pics on how people have set this up. Here is a pic of what we are working with. Thanks in advance.

Stephen

I ws wondering that myself. The guy we are building a truck for got it for free, so he wants to use it if he can.

do that, easier/cheaper if you go ford kingpin knuck, c's, then cust bracket(ebay) for the chevy 3/4 ton caliper brackets, prolly need to change the side gears to 35 spline and run the 60f axles.

Why is he wasting his time? Nothing wrong with closed knuckle Dana 70's. They run some big u-joints, and some of them out there have 35 spline inners. Outer spline count is odd, around 23 iirc? They are pretty beefy axles. They just need to be converted to disc's. IH D70F's are the ones to use, over the Dodge D70F's.

Was waiting for that. Can't believe it took this long. Don't worry, it will be changed. This front end came out of one of the local bog-in trucks. It had a monster 4-link bracket welded to it that we cut off. He played in the mud, and didn't have to worry about the front brakes.

So, does anyone have any pics, or am I going to have to try and build some sort of bracket that bolts on the outside of the physical knuckle and extends outward to where the rotor will be positioned?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephen

well, after you do what was said above and change everything out to open knukle, side gears, shafts, disc brakes, hub, rotors and other msc. shit, you are gonna have a chunk of change in it. Why not start with a 60 to begin with.

or, if you use the complete axle and booty fab some kind of major off set caliper braket, or find a rotor with a rediculous deep hat to get the rotor close to the knukle, your gonna have more money in it. and then, when you break it, finding parts for it.

just because it was free doesnt make it a good candidate.

this is true, but if you have time and money, its the fun factor.

Besides the larger turning radius there is nothing wrong with closed knuckles. Like I said, D70F's should have large u-joints, large shafts and high spline counts. No reason to turn it into an open knuckle axle. I will admit finding parts for a D70F might be hard, but I bet it wouldn't be that bad. A lot of HD equipment used them as well.

One of my fellow ISFJA members has a c/k D70F and iirc he has come up with a way to get disc brakes on it. His member name is Scotty. He's also on this board, but I don't know what his name is here. Might be the same. Might want to PM him and ask him. You may be able to work with the c/k D60F disc brake kit.

Well i think that the first thing would be to find a set of rotors with a lot of offset toward the stationary parts. Then find a big beefie caliper thats easy to mount, as in uses bolts to mount. Then you'll need to cut up some mounting hardware for the calipers.

You could also have those spacers machined or a piece welded on them to move a caliper further inboard.

Your first question, does it have tracta joints?
- if yes you need to start sourcing U-joints as the tracta joints don't last trail riding.

Second, can you live with the gears it has now and forever?
- you better get teh BOM and find out if it's a pre or post 1971 with the offset of 0.5"

Third I'm steeling that picture I'm starting a draft page http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/Dana70.htm

Was told by the previous owner of this 70 that it has the u-joint type shafts inside, and that the splines on the passenger outer shaft are stripped. Hopefully we will get this thing torn apart this week, and I will ge tmore pics and try to fab up a beefy caliper bracket. We have some ideas on what we think it should look like and how it should work, but I am open to all comments.

Here is another pic of it for your draft page.
Note: the perch on the driver side is not welded on, I know it is at a different angle than the other side.
