Recent books read

Inspired by the book club thread.

since noone wants to do a book exchange lets just post up recent books read and a good, bad and ugly reccomendation list.

Anyways my recent:

A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah (currently reading) the one Starbucks is pushing...pretty good so far, read half of it in an afternoon. Wasn't sure what to expect but it is worth looking at.

Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz Very texture driven story about memories of his life growing up in pre war Poland. Interesting read to say the least.

Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby jr. Dark and forboding look into the despondent life of a group of drug addicted transvestites. It's kind of a tough read as are most of his books but well worth it.

Ethics-- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Infinite Insights into Kenpo, Vol 2-- Ed Parker

The Complete Japanese Joinery-- translated by Koichi Paul Nii, from two volumes by Hideo Sato and Yasua Nakahara

Building the Timber Frame House: the Revival of a Forgotten Craft-- Tedd Benson with James Gruber

very good stuff. I'm about to get into a couple biographies: an abridged version of the trillion-volume Winston Churchill tome, and one on Patton.

The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. It's a memoir of him growing up in teh 50's. It's hilarious.

Ulysses, James Joyce. Holy Crap it's a hard read. 3 stars out of 5 if you're into self-inflicted pain.
The Story of O, by I forget. Starts out interesting but gets twisted very quickly 1 star.
Faust, by Nietchze (sp) 5 out of 5.
The Game by Niel Strauss, The life of a pick up artist, very interesting, I wish I had read it when I was 20, but don't think I would have gotten much beyond the first few chapters. 4 out of 5.

For me it was laugh out loud funny although my wife didn't find it so. If you haven't already read it and you like that one pick up A Walk In The Woods.

About 1/4 of the way into The Grapes of Wrath. Never got around to reading that one in H.S. or college. Really enjoy it so far, as I have with all of Steinbeck's other stuff.

Another vote for A Walk in the Woods.

Just got done reading No Shortcuts to the Top by Ed Viesturs. Pretty good book about his career and climbing the worlds 8,000s.

So tonight I decided to re-read Diary of A.N. by Julius Horowitz

Awesome book if you are able to find it, I had to order it since it is out of print.

just finished "Desert Solitaire" by Edward Abbey, it provides a very unique perspective on enviromental conservationalism and how society has changed since the '50s. A great read, and based in Moab.

Just finished 'Cannonball' by Brock Yates. Overview of all the races from his perspective, then short memories of the events from many participants. Very interesting read.

Now reading 'The Lincoln Lawyer' by Michael Connely. Really like his style. Fast moving & hard to put down. Very immersive. Enjoyed 'The Poet' & 'Blood Work' by him, so now moving thru his library of work.

Next will be 'Hot Rod' by Brock Yates.
