Traction bar mounting—Do the upper and lower axle mounts need to be inline?

Is there any reason that the upper and lower axle mounts for a ladder bar style (ie Sam’s Offroad style) traction bar need to be inline with each other? Specifically having the upper mount further towards the center, and the lower mount more outboard towards the passenger side? (When viewed from the front of the truck, the bar would look like / ) I’m trying to clear my exhaust. I am using bushings at the axle end, and the fixed end of the shackle, with a Johnny Joint at the shackle-end of the bar. I was planning to run the bushings in a horizontal orientation.

I have seen this setup in several toyotas that seemed to run it without problems. I think it would be fine.

I wish I could. But since I'm not a fan of straight pipe exhaust on a trail rig, its not really an option.

How doe's that work . I alway's thought that you had to have 2 Link's to the axle to stop axle wrap. Otherwise it doesn't work?

There is another tube underneath that you can't cause of the axle and driveshaft. You can see the tubes that are used to brace the traction bar bending around the driveshaft.

Alternate mounting arrangements will work, but you need to keep the following in mind:

1) The distance between the mounts affects how much force is on the bushings. If the mounts are too close, the bushings will split. You will also have more force on each tube in the bar (having the bushings close together is like having a shorter lever arm trying to hold the axle from rotating).

2) Rotating the bushings will tend to make the angle between the tubes smaller, and thus the bar weaker. Basically you are moving from a truss to a single tube if you take this to the extreme of mounts in front/behind the axle. It would have to be one hell of a tube to hold up to that much bending moment.
