Police track down author of threatening letters after mom writes return address on envelopes

She broke his heart in third grade, he said, and he never forgot.

Twelve years later, Anthony Michael Perone has admitted to sending threatening missives to his former classmate and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Last June, when federal authorities searched the home in Fairmont, Minn., where Perone, 20, lived with his parents, they found a loaded .22-caliber rifle he'd bought in May, a backpack filled with ammunition, a suitcase packed with clothes and a machete, "as well as documents and other materials reflecting imminent, anticipated travel to Connecticut," according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Police and U.S. postal inspectors began investigating Perone last spring after the Connecticut woman received the letters in envelopes that carried Perone's name and a Minnesota return address.

The first letter, postmarked from Minnesota on May 1, was a single page, torn out of a spiral notebook. On the front of the page, in verse laden with misspellings, the sender wrote:

Dear (name redacted) your as Beatiful

as the sunset. ugly as the night.

come with me and I'll treat you

Right. If not prepare to fight

your Secret

admireir

The page also included a series of drawings colored with crayon or colored pencil. The drawings included a heart dripping blood, an assault rifle and a dollar bill.

The back of the page had a drawing of a tombstone with the woman's name, "RIP" and the inscription "your Tombstone where
you Lye." An envelope that arrived May 16 - also bearing Perone's name and return address - contained nine numbered pages torn from a spiral notebook. The letter was signed "DEATH STALKER."
The first six pages contained drawings from which the woman was to guess who was sending the missive. The drawings were of scenes purportedly from their third- and fourth-grade classes.

Tom Carson, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office for the District of Connecticut, declined to say where the school was, but the affidavit indicates it is in Connecticut.

A verse written on the eighth page tells the woman that "now comes a point in your Life where everything changes. for 20 years you Lived a rich Life with everything. money, family, Being popular. It's now gonna end. your gonna learn about suffering and having nothing. pain you will feel. "

The back side of the final page contained yet another verse:

You made my Life a

Living hell. a Long time

ago. I Suffered from it.

now your gonna feel that.

no one can help you. I

will never Stop

until you are mine.

Love

Death

Stalker

PS NEVER sleep sound

Again. I'm comin for you.

I'm watchin your every

move.

When federal authorities questioned Perone and his family, they discovered he had not written his return address on the letters. Rather, he had left the letters for his mother to mail, and thinking they were "simply innocuous letters intended for a friend in Connecticut," she wrote Perone's name and address on them, the affidavit says.

Perone's guilty plea to federal charges of mailing threatening letters was a result of a plea bargain with federal prosecutors. Perone, who attended grade school in Connecticut with the woman, is being held at a federal facility in Rhode Island.

A man who answered the phone at the Perone family's residence in Fairmont would not comment on the case.

Carson, the U.S. attorney's office spokesman, said prosecutors couldn't comment on Perone's motive.

"I would leave those questions up to his attorney at this point," he said.

But Perone's attorney, Paul F. Thomas, an assistant federal public defender in New Haven, Conn., said he also wouldn't comment on the motive.
