Best way to get West?

im leaving vermont (finally), and going to back where i came from, Las Vegas . apart from being uber psyched that i dont have to freeze my ass off anymore or slog around in mud for 4 months-im a little aprehensive about the drive.

so i need input on which way to go.

Should i take I70? and suffer through the midwest and the great lakes. this is the quickest route-the only thing im worried about is the weather, specifically between nebraska and utah. i definately dont wanna get fucked going over the rockies in my locked 4runner, and my girlfriend in her corolla with all seasons. on the other hand im sure the drive thru the western slope/entirety of utah is awesome.

should i take I40? ive done this several times, but this would mean heading south, outta the way and visiting my hokie relatives , plus its boring as shit, and i just drove it again last month.

so does I70 suck this time of year as far as rocky mountain blizzards and upper plains squalls and other assorted evil? or is it worth it to go out of my way to take 40? is there some other highway in between? bacoooooooon??

thanks.

Best way to head west is to follow the sun in the afternoons.

It has been pretty nice in the Rockies the last couple of weeks, but a storm is supposed to come through and drop a little bit of snow late this week. It is late enough in the year that most of the big mountain snows should be done, but it does snow well into April up there. In my opinion, you should be just fine taking I 70 across CO.

I'd do everything I could to avoid driving across Nebraska. If you must, do it at night. You won't realize what kind of hell you're in.

When I moved out here from Minneapolis we went down 35 to 40, across 40 to Pheonix, down to 10 and then finished up. You're not going as far south as us though.

We wanted to avoid as many mountains as possible and I'm glad we did with the moving truck.

Take 70. 80 is the hell route, through boring IN, IL, IA, NE, and WY. If I were you, I'd take 90 across NY, making sure to bitch about the tolls to every overpaid NYS worker you see, stop in Akron OH to raid the Summit bargain rack, and enjoy Columbus on your way to I-70.
After a quick jaunt through the I states, I would brace myself for St. Louis, which is just no fun. After staying tense for the entire state, I would probably stop in Lawrence and have a beer at the Free State Brewery. Then I'd get a hotel out of the city, wake up refreshed, and drive to Vail, where I would have a great time up high, taking it easy on the libation of course, to avoid mountain-induced Uberhangovers. After that, I'd enjoy the drive down the backside of the Rockies, and through Glenwood Canyon. Stop for gas in Green River, UT, and then have dinner in St. George.

Almost home! I would probably wait and hit Vegas in the AM, something special about the sun hitting that space needle.

anyway.

I70 doesn't go through Nebraska.

True, w/o a doubt the worst stretch of I70 for traffic starts just East of STL & extends 15 miles into Kansas. Indy is no big deal & Denver isn't either (outside of rush hour). But, traffic anywhere in Missouri can be a bitch on I70.

What I'd do-Pick the most direct route and drive at night, start at the end of evening rush hour, stop at the beginning of morning rush hour.

space needle's in seattle..

im going the quickest route possible, i just got back from a 2800 mile road trip march 1st-so the only joy ill have driving is seeing vermont in my rearview mirror.

agreed nebraska sucks the balls, ive done 80 before going east and hated it past WY-but atleast its flat as fawk, plus ill get to see how the motor does on ethanol mix out that way.

should be crazy.

You know what I mean, fawker!

I'm about to drive to NY next week, again. I MUCH prefer 70.

You're adding like... a TON of miles, taking 80. But the drive through UT is nice.

I've got work there... for about a month. I grew up east of Syracuse, so it's kind of nice to get back and visit. If it weren't for the utter lack of freedom in NY, I'd probably still be there... but the winters suck, too, so maybe not. First stop is on the west shore of Seneca Lake, at the "corporate HQ" hahah ie, a big farm where I keep my stuff.

I'll wave if I see ya!

I used to drive from Boston to Buffalo all the time (parents/girlfriend in Buffalo, school in Boston). I never got a ticket and I made the drive in 5.5 hours once. Most of the time was very late night though.

Then I moved to Minnesota and on the first trip back to Buffalo for the holidays I managed 2 speeding tickets on the way. The trooper in Cleveland seemed like a dick, the one in NY was very nice.

Made the trip out here with no issues although the gas powered moving van, filled to capacity with a car on a tow dolly behind it probably had something to do with it.
