Square peg, round hole...6-50P to 10-30R ?
The welder (and the extension cord) both have a 6-50P. The dryer outlet is 10-30R.
The welder max draw lists as 18A at 230V, so I'm not concerned about drawing 50 working amps through the 30A circuit...if that happens something's wrong and the circuit opens, etc. I was thinking the adapter would just be a very short section of stranded 6/3 or 8/3 STOW or whatever I can find, with the appropriate connector on either end. Problem is the 6-50 stuff lists as "grounding", "self grounding" etc. whereas the 10-30 connectors list as "non grounding". What's with the third prong on 10-30, then? Blank? I'm certainly not interested in sticking a grounded plug to a non-grounded outlet. Other problem is all the female ends I've found seem to be wall mounts...I'm guessing this isn't a problem and honestly if the ground/non ground thing isn't an issue it'd probably be easier to make a plug and receptacle from a 10' run of 6/3 or 8/3 and hang the receptacle in the garage. Are there such things as OTS conversion plugs? Is the ground/non-ground listing a problem? FWIW I have not tested the dryer outlet but intend to get to it. Any advice? TIA, Sean |

Talked to the Miller guys, their thought was that it should work fine since the angled socket on the 10-30R lists as ground, so if I wire the connector straight through it should work fine.
Ace hardware even has the plug/socket, gonna have to hunt around for cable tho. |

They should have the cable too. Easiest way to make your adaptor is to buy a dryer cord (which will already have the 10-30R plug on it) and then attach a 6-50P socket to the other end

.I noticed Miller's DVI 220V plug (on a Passport, dunno about the one on the big DVI) has a mark on it, stating it's rated for 20A. The 6' dryer cords are 10/3, rated for 30A, so for 35 bucks I have an adapter that'll work just fine...screwed the 6-50R to a nearby stud, hooked up the (fawking massive) 220V extension cord, and now I'm lighting an arc at 220V at the end of the driveway from the 10-30R in the basement .-Sean |
