School bullying affects majority of elementary students FUGGIN CA AGAIN

Note what is considered bullying to these twits.

School bullying affects majority of elementary students

STANFORD, Calif. - Nine out of 10 elementary students have been bullied by their peers, according to a simple questionnaire developed by researchers at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and the Stanford University School of Medicine. What's more, nearly six in 10 children surveyed in the preliminary study reported participating in some type of bullying themselves in the past year.

The survey explored two forms of bullying: direct, such as threatening physical harm, and indirect, such as excluding someone or spreading rumors. The researchers say the five-minute questionnaire is the first simple, reliable way for teachers and physicians to identify kids at risk and to measure the success of interventions aimed at reducing bullying in schools.

"We know that both bullies and victims tend to suffer higher levels of depression and other mental health problems throughout their lives," said child psychiatrist Tom Tarshis, MD, lead author of the study. "We need to change the perception that bullying at school is a part of life and that victims just need to toughen up."

Tarshis was completing a fellowship in child psychiatry and research at Packard Children's at the time he developed the questionnaire. He is currently the director of the Bay Area Children's Association. The research will be published in the April issue of the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.

"When I first started to study this subject, there was no real questionnaire that had been tested," said Tarshis. "We couldn't take the next step until we had a tool that we knew worked."

Although the classic definition of bullying brings to mind fistfights in the schoolyard, other more subtle forms of torment also were surveyed. Tarshis recounted a girl in the ninth grade whose friends decided to stop speaking to her, spread nasty rumors about her and exclude her from activities, all right under the nose of an unsuspecting teacher.

"It was a little distressing how prevalent the problem is even in the middle- to upper-middle-class schools we surveyed," said Tarshis.

He and his co-author, Lynne Huffman, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and of psychiatry at the School of Medicine, surveyed 270 children in grades three through six in two schools in California and one in Arizona to determine if the 22-item questionnaire yielded statistically accurate results. Students were scored based on their responses - never, sometimes or often - to such statements as, "At recess I play by myself," "Other students ignore me on purpose," and "Other students leave me out of games on purpose."

Tarshis and Huffman then compared the results to those of other, more complicated surveys intended to identify bullies and victims. They also administered their survey twice to 175 of the students to determine if the results were consistent over time. They found that the responses were highly reliable, and the survey was easily understood and completed by even the youngest students in the sample.

"We found it particularly interesting that these indications of victimization and bullying are apparent at very young ages," said Huffman. "Our hope is that this questionnaire will be utilized by teachers, pediatricians and even child psychiatrists to identify those children needing early and direct intervention."

The stakes are high. Previous research has shown that, without intervention, bullying behavior persists over time: a child who is a bully in kindergarten is often a bully in elementary school, high school and beyond. Such behaviors are not without consequence, though. These career bullies are not only slightly more likely than their peers to serve prison time as adults, they also tend to suffer from depression.

Perhaps not surprisingly, kids who are routinely victimized exhibit higher levels of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts than do non-victims. Such statistics highlight the importance of being able to identify at-risk kids and assess the effectiveness of interventions.

Efforts to stop school bullying have been gathering steam for several years. Those most likely to be effective, according to Tarshis, promote an attitude change from the principal to the recess monitors to the parents. They range from presentations to entire schools to discussions with individual students about how to respond when they are bullied or when they see someone bullying another student.

"Positive peer pressure is an important component of effective intervention," said Tarshis. "When uninvolved students step up and let the perpetrator know that their behavior is not acceptable, it's a powerful message."

I take from your tone that you've never been on the receiving end of psychological warfare waged by the ubiquitous catty clique of socialite spawnettes. On the whole, I'd rather just get punched by a slow-witted blue collar kid.

Your thread title is especially bully-esque. Please delete this thread and re-post with a kinder, gentler thread title.

All these movies/books that takes place in the future and society is this rule laden, ultra-strict, "utopia".... Doesn't seem to be so far fetched.

I see no problem in bullying, it's part of life. They can take their trends/studies and ram them up their ass sideways. Fawkin world isn't all pretty pretty, I sure as hell don't want my child being pampered to death in school then get bitch slapped by reality when they're on their own.

For the record, I got bullyed A LOT starting in junior high mainly because of the music(punk) I listened to. No joke, I was the only one in my school into it at the time which should be no suprise attending PigHoller High.

I got bullied a lot oin elementary school, junior high was pretty neutral and high school I gave as much as I recieved in the bullying.

Childhood is cruel but 90% or better seem to make it through it just fine. This emotional scarring they talk about is nothing more than learning lifes lessons.

Bullies are real, accept it. My mom told me if I was being picked on by one, and they tried to fight me, make my suspension worth it. I never got picked on really, maybe a few times, and while scared, I backed myself up. That lead to me being left alone when they saw treat me nice, I will do the same, be a jerk, I will hit you in the head with my backpack.

I think kids biggest problems now days are adults trying to study them to protect them, when all they do is hurt them and the natural process of growing up and dealing with idiots. You know how many people I deal with at work, who are so called experts on kids, that don't even work in a classroom? It's funny as heck to hear them talk about kids, when they don't even spend time with kids, yet know so much about them.

PS, Standford while in CA isn't actually part of it. Just like Berkley, Davis, Humbolt, most of the Bay Area and chunks of SoCal.

And there you have it.

This is just the next step in 'protecting' our society from *bad* things. Fawk em, the slow uncoordinated kid is the last one picked for a team because he has the least amount of skill to contribute to it. He might be the first one picked for a math or science team. Deal with it.

These nitwits are breading and grooming the next generation of pussified, oversensitive victims of those who understand how the real world operates.

My gf's parents have puppies. Those things are constantly kicking each other's asses. Imagine how long animals would live in the real world if they didn't play fight with each other to build skills when they were young. It's all part of learning to live in a shitty world. You can't remove bad from the world, so you must learn how live with it. All this bull shit about not keeping score and not playing dodgeball makes me want to start my own school where you aren't prescribed every head medicine, you learn to compete at what you're good at or go home, and that things aren't always FAIR.

The problem in today's feelgood society is that the bullyee's get their ass in a sling if they fight back. I can remember getting pushed around by one of the neighborhood punks when I was in elementary school. I finally had enough and wrapped my Hopalong Cassidy lunchbox around the kid's skull . . . End of bullying. The kid left me alone from that day forward.

If that happened today I would be expelled, incarcerated, evaluated, put on suicide watch and given Ritalin suppositories until I was 21.

What I find ironic is that in the olden dayz, before we were saved from ourselves, we didn't have all of these school massacres, suicide bombings, high speed chases, bum bashing, gang rapes, ad nauseum.

I'm tired of being saved.

Pony, I read in another post that you are a moron (pass it on).
You should be excluded and invited to join "the band"

Bullying as they defined it: "excluding someone or spreading rumors"

Yeah, we all know bullying never happens in the corporate world. The more kids are babied, the worse it gets. My sis visited for easter, while we were at a restaurant, the kid at a table next to us bonked his head being an idiot after he was told not to and bawled, so mom awed and oo'd him and walked him around the restaurant. My 2 year old nephew did the same thing 5 minutes later after he was told not to do that. Her response? "What did you think was going to happen, maybe you'll pay attention next time." He got over it in about 30 seconds while the other kid was still being walked and bounced around the restaurant whining.

The world isn't full of people wanting to be your best buddy. It's life, fucking get used to it.

Those Born 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS
WHO SURVIVED the
1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we
rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and

NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because .

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING !

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

P>No one was able to reach us all day.

And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down
the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,

made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang
the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them . CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as
kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives

for our own good

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Two of the best bullies in my high school fought. One made the other retarded literally and the winner went on to be an unsuccessful WWF wrestler. Then was on Jerry Springer as a guy who liked some girl wearing a xmas box? I never fought either. I'm 30 5'9" 138 and I think all these parents need to tell the kids that people are assholes deal with it.
