fuel pump keeps going bad

i have a small electric pump mounted on my frame. its about the 3rd or 4th one thats gone bad. the tank is mounted in my bed and the tank outlet is on the bottom, so fuel is being fed to the pump via gravity. trucks been sitting for a month or two, and i got about a gallon of water in my tank, i found that today, and had to bleed it all out, a good bit of it went thru the fuel pump. once all the water was out and the carb was dry, i hooked it back up, and it fired and ran for about 15 minutes, then the pump just quit. if i put power to the pump, it'll give one little squirt, but thats it. any ideas why its continually burning up these pumps? im sure the water wasn't good for it, but i wouldn't think that would kill it...
