Got shot at today or "How my new neighbor says hello"

So today a friend and I went out to some property that my parents recently acquired. It has about 4 acres cleared for a house to be built on. All the brush and trees are in a HUGH pile about 200 yards off the property line in the upper corner. The neighbors house is about 50 yards past that, so he is about 250 yards from the pile. We decide that it is best to shoot from his side of the pile with our backs to his house so there is no chance of a stray going his way...

So we get about 30 rds of 45ACP and we hear shooting from over at his house... I think to my self "well at least hes cool with shooting" about that time my friend and I start hearing POP, POP...HISSSS HISSSSS....POP...HISSS...POP,POP,POP,HISSS,POP,HIS S,HISS,HISS....we look at each other with a dumb founded look thinking, Is some ass hole REALLY shooting at us?

So we start talking, and decided that we are both armed and most likely there is only one of him,so we will go talk to him to see whats up...

So we ring the door bell and a woman about 35 answers...My friend says "Mam, has any one over here smoked off a few rounds in our direction"

...she obviously has no idea what he just said, so it is a good this that her husband is close behind... This is how the conversation went:

Him: Yeah there were some people shooting right over there a bit ago (points to out property)

Me: Yes, that was us, some one from this direction opened fire on us a few mins ago, and we would just like to know why.

Him:Yeah, I Don't really like guns

Me:That fine, but someone just shot at us

Him: Yeah, I heard some shooting over there and I have kids, so I got my 9mm and popped a few rounds into that dirt pile over there, so they know im back here...

Me: Well then you shot at us...I am very aware that you are back here thats why we came to this side of the property to shoot in the opposite direction of your house

Him: Naw, must have been someone else...

Me: Who else? You?

Then this ass hole has the nerve to say "too bad we had to get off on the wrong foot being new neighbors and all, all you had to do was come over and say hi, you didn't need to come around and just start shooting when you like..."

HEY ASS HOLE, YOU FUCKING SHOT AT ME!!!

Im still fucking pissed about the whole deal... he could very well have killed one or both of us, if he thinks that its ok to just open fire on people when they bother you, what else will this guy do? I mean fuck man...

End rant...

The last thing I want is some punks shooting up the woods at my once-isolated house. That said loosing a few rounds of 9mm in your direction wouldn't be my first choice of remedy.

chalk it up to " my neighbor is an asshole, I'll let him know the next time i do ANYTHING around my house like cut my grass, cut down a tree, shoot at dirt,drive across my lawn to get to his, etc..." You are not going to change him, just be overly curteous and smile alot, he'll realize he is an asshole over time.

but next time im taking the AR-15 to return accurate fire if i get shot at...

what is on the other 3 sides of your property? 4 acres doesn't seem like all that much to be shooting but i guess it depends on the surroundings and back stop.

He had no right to shoot at you, thats insaine but you should've let them know you were going to be shooting near their house if you were only 50 yards away. I would not approve of someone shooting 50 yards from my house due to the off-chance of a stray.

we have 30 acres, but we wanted to use the huge brush pile that was created from clearing 4 of the 30 acres for a back stop...

In NC, when not restricted by municipality restrictions, I believe you have to be 1000 feet from any dwelling. Not really practical or a good definition of a realistic safe backdrop but it is on the books if they choose to get serious.

You might check your local statutes to make sure of being on the right side of the rules of your area- THEN return fire

In TN, I believe it's 100 yards, without permission. If you have permission, you can sit on their porch and shoot.

hes 50 yards from the property line, we were 200 yards from the property line so we were about 250 yards or (750 feet for the mathmaticaly challanged)away...This was not in a neighborhood type place, its in the middle of nowhere, he just happens to live right on the edge of what we own...the next house is out of range of hearing shots fired...

this 200 yards is all wooded...for him to have shot rounds that "buzzed" us, he had to have come on our property to do it... I just now thought of this...
