New tool- anyone guess what it does?

Out of need I built a new tool to use in the shop last week. It makes it possible to need only 2 hands to do a job that many times requires 2 sets. Anyone who knows what type of work I do most of the time may guess right away.

There are 4 sets of holes for different applications. The all thread acts as a jam bolt to locate something. Any guesses?

Not deburred obviously. For its purpose it does not need to be. It simply holds something in place while you drive something else onto the part being held.

Not tranny related.
Not a jig.

It makes life so much easier when you use it. I kicked myself in the butt for not making one sooner.

Been in allot of diff's and the only one I can think of that would need something is some of the POS Detroits.

Are all the holes in the plate needed or just put there in random from a previous job?

Maybe I just use my press for what ever it is our doing, either that or it's a Jeep thing.

Its a tool so that you can hold the pinion while you are setting the outside bearing.........if you don't have a friend around to help ya.

Damnit Andy, you cheated.

It works awesome BTW.

The holes are patterned for D30,35,44 and 60. Room for 8.8's too.

One - I use a friend, their cheaper and usually owe me favors anyway.

Two - I use setup bearings to set backlash until final assy.

Funny, never needed the espresso machine thingy before...

I've only setup 2 diffs in my life. A D44 and an AMC20, but I never needed another set of hands for the setup.

I think what I did was get a non-locking nut for the pinion and just spun it on snug real quick. Or I slapped some tube or something else in the yoke and just used half of the threads on the locking nut.

i'm with YOU. i never needed a second set of hands to set up pinion bearings. i've set-up gears on a couple 44's and Kia 3rds, but not much else. only thing i needed help with was using a friends press to swap shims on the 44 carriers.

but i'm so redneck, i just pound ball joints in with BFH, piece of tube and big washer, so as not to damage the boot.

Like I thought, it's a Jeep thingy tool.

That's pretty much what we do too, reuse the old nut with spacers to set pinon backlash and then walla.

I need my friends to keep me company and drink beer while we work on crap.

The first ARB was a little nerve racking, drilling out a none replaceable carrier bearing strap something about that just didn't seem right.

Its not a have to have tool, but it does hold the pinion in place so that when the seal is installed, the jarring does not potentially let the pinion fall. I have set up litterally over 1500 diffs without it. But the few I have with it makes it a bit easier.

I have used a piece of tube and another nut to pull the pinion down, but this way the pinion is located until you are ready to set preload.

I guess I was just bored and needed to let my creative side take over.

I just put the seal in place after the carrier is in.
