Beadlock Street Legality
I know in most if not all states beadlocks are illegal to run on the street. Why is this? I wanna run them on my dail driver/trail rig but I am afraid of law trouble. I doubt any cop will even know what they are or that they are ilegal though. Anybody run em on a rig that sees road time? Any problems?

I could be wrong but I think the beadlocks are illegal thing is like the hydro steering is illegal myth...Ever seen the Ultimate Adventure? They put hundreds of miles on their beadlocked rigs with no problems. Just keep a check on air pressure and be sure if you have DIY locks that you don't have any leaks.

I have a friend who ran beadlocks with no problems both on and off road. I don't think they are illegal but i think the reason they are said to be illegal is due to the fact that no laws, that I know of at least, say one way or the other. I still don't know that I would chance it.

read your state law.
If it doesn't meet DOT certification, it's "against the law" in many states for anything other than off-road use. Same with headlamps, turn signal brightness, etc etc. |

I think people get confused, some are not DOT approved, That usually does not mean they are illegal. I would be really shocked if anyone here has been pulled over and cited for beadlocks.

My guess- if the manufacturer puts the rim through the DOT certification tests or approval process then they will be street legal. It's not because they are beadlocks-but because they haven't been DOT approved. Not sure how you would go about proving or disproving my guess.

and to yoga class to get limbered up
![]() Seriously though the dot stamps are there to protect the general public, it shows that the wheel has been proven to be safe, may not be the best design (ie 16.5 rims and their lack of a safety bead) but its safe in the eyes of dot/government to not harm the general public, as its been put through whatever paces it has be to pass, just like most everything else. Its not like they aren't safe and infact if they are mechanical sound (good welds, etc) i'd trust them moreso then regular wheels, its just that particular wheel/beadlock combo hasn't been proven it meets the standards the dot mandates.

to be road legal all a rim needs is marking to denote the size, that makes it DOT compliant
there is no rigorous testing facility |

Some of you were poked in your soft spots as babies....
Your lift isn't DOT, your brake lines aren't DOT, your cobbled together crappy axles aren't DOT. And yet you worry about WHEELS??? DOT approval is for OEMs, not the aftermarket. You can worry about it forever, but if your state doesn't have a law specifically prohibiting something, its legal. Welcome to america. Quit ruining it for the rest of us. |
