Two women charged with plot to kill mom, take baby

Blue Springs police thwarted a plan Monday to cut a baby from the womb of a pregnant woman who was being held against her will at a Blue Springs motel.

The pregnant woman, Amanda Howard, 18, was lured into leaving her Clinton, Mo., home on the pretense of purchasing baby clothes at a reasonable price from two women she had met on the Internet. Howard had placed an advertisement on MySpace, asking for baby clothes.

Instead, the women picked up the pregnant woman in their vehicle and assaulted her while in route to the Interstate Inn at Woods Chapel Road and Interstate 70. They sprayed Howard with pepper spray, according to Blue Springs Police Detective Troy Pharr. Once at the motel, they tied up Howard and left her in the bathroom of the room they had rented.

"I think we made it there just in the nick of time," Pharr said during a news conference Tuesday in Blue Springs.

The plan was foiled when one of the suspects, Alisa D. Betts, 17, of Atchison, Kan., "got cold feet" and called police claiming that a pregnant woman was screaming with labor pains at the motel. Jackson County prosecutors today charged Betts with first-degree kidnapping. She is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

The other woman, Lauren M. Gash, 19, of Odessa, was charged with kidnapping and first-degree assault. She was being held on a $750,000 cash-only bond, Pharr said.

Howard,, who is due next week, is being treated at a hospital and asked for the media to respect her privacy until she is well enough to comment. She is a recent graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, Mo. Howard sent her former stepmother, Annette Howard, as a spokesperson for the family during the press conference. The former stepmother said the baby and mother-to-be are in good condition, and a sonogram indicates the baby was unharmed.

Blue Springs Police Officer Brandon Shrout said police responded to what they thought was an EMS call. When Gash opened the door to the motel room, she told police her friend was in labor and that's why she was screaming. However, police became suspicious when they found Howard in the bathroom with duct tape around her neck. Shrout noticed that Howard had rope marks around her wrists.

Shrout said the events and the plan were unbelievable.

"I've been here (the Blue Springs Police Department) 12 years and I've never seen anything like this," he said. "The look on (Howard's) face told the whole story. This is the real thing."

Shrout said the two women initially told different stories about the reasons for being at the motel. Police later obtained a search warrant and discovered items they believe would have been used to cut the baby from the victim's belly. Howard later told police the suspects planned to leave her in the motel room to die.

A written police report states that Betts told another officer, Rob Olson, who responded to the initial call to the motel, that the women were holding Howard there so that the baby's father could take the baby after it was born.

Betts later told police that on the way to Clinton to pick up Howard, Gash said two men, whom she called Jonathan or Joe and David, planned to take the victim to the motel to cut the baby from the victim and leave her there to die.

During a search of the motel room, police discovered scissors, duct tape, a plastic drop cloth, insulin with a syringe, counterfeit copies of a birth certificate labeled "Johnny Gash" and "Center Point Hospital."

Police also discovered a shopping list of needed items that included a baseball bat, hammer, a tarp and rope.

While at the motel, the victim struggled to break free after being tied up. She told police that Gash sat on her stomach and, grabbing both sides of her head, twisted her neck until it made a loud popping noise more than once. Howard told police she believed that Gash was trying to break her neck.

While police are not sure what led to the abduction, they are reminded of the case of Bobbie Jo Stinnett of Skidmore, Mo., whose baby was cut from her body and kidnapped while she was left to die.

"The idea came from somewhere, and it matches very close," Pharr said.

The former stepmother said at the news conference that the victim now realizes her mistake in leaving with the two women.

"She said to me in the hospital, 'my head told me not to do this, but my mouth said, yes,'" the former mother-in-law said.

The women had been at the motel for the last two days, Pharr said.

While in the car in route to the motel, Howard became suspicious when the two women began talking about their plans and one said, "How are we gonna do this?" When the victim reached for her cell phone to call 911, one of the women sprayed her with Mace.

While Shrout was guarding the crime scene, Gash's father, Donald W. Gash and Howard's sister arrived and told police that Lauren Gash recently had a baby shower. She later called her family to report that she'd had a baby and named him "Johnny."

During a police interview after she was arrested, an officer noticed that Gash was wearing maternity pants. When the officer asked Gash if she was pregnant, she replied "not anymore."
