Land Cruiser O' Land rover

I had to sell the pig of a dodge this weekend for practicallity, it sucks loading and unloading a kid in an Ext cab, gas sucks, and its almost been for 2 straight months now every 2 weeks something needs to be fixed, aiight well, its gone now and I really couldnt be happier.

Ive managed to scrap together about 7g's for something else and i was really looking for something along the lines of a LC or LR, can anyone think of anything better besides a metro wagon? Still wanted something 4wd for hunting w. texas, but not a pile. Two of the ether i had been looking at was...

The Land Rover will probably be quite a bit cheaper initially, but in the long run will end up costing you more. If your budget is $7K I would plan on spending $6K and using the rest to get caught up on maint items. I am pretty biased, but the prices on the FZJ80 (93-97) LandCruisers is getting pretty low and they are a great truck. A big bonus with the LandCruisers is that they have lockers front and rear as an option, you just need to be patient and find one that has the option.

91 and 92 FJ80s have the underpowered 3F motor. If it is not cost prohibitive, try to swing a 93 up FJZ80 which has 25% more ponies. 93 up also may have optional factory rear full floater and electric front and rear lockers.

The 91 is still a great truck, just not as good as the 93-97.

Never has a person TRIED to like land rover/range rover more than me but every time I test drive one I remember why I could never own one...just go drive the toyota and then go drive the land rover and you'll know what I'm talking about!

Go with a 93 - 97 FZJ80, you won't be sorry. They came factory with solid front and rear axles. If you look hard enough, they also came with factory e-lockers. Putting a lift under them is really cheap around $300 (we are an ARB dealer ). With the J lift you can easily fit 35's under there and with some fender trimming in the front you can do 37's. The only real problem you might run into with the FZJ80 is the head gasket. On the 95 - 97 era Toyota changed emissions and the head gasket is thinner. Toyota has updated the gasket but from what I hear and its a royal pain in the ass to fix. Otherwise the engines will last for 200k or more. There is also the possibility of rebuilding the front axle since it is full time 4wd, but its nothing more than a beefed up version of a mini truck housing (8" third, with way bigger birfields).

Or "metro" wagon seem to do alright at Katemcy Rocks, TX

Until you take it off-road! I've driven a lot of trucks and have yet to find one as capable off-road as a stock Rover.

Also, if you're hauling your children, you will have a hard time finding a safer vehicle to be in than a Land Rover. I know of seven or eight folks who've been in rollovers in their Rovers and only one did not survive.

Keep in mind that (Cue all of the Cruiser folks to come and crucify me) the Land Cruiser was a Japanese copy of the Rover. Many of the design shortcomings of the Series Rovers were sadly copied by Toyota.

Once you get caught up on the deferred maintenance, the Land Rover can be just as reliable as any other make, save Toyota.

Discoweb.org is a good resource for Rover stuff less hardcore than Pirate.

Just like the FJ40 Land Cruiser series, the Japanese copied the jeep platform and made it 10x stronger and better

My FJ40 never breaks rear half shaft like my POS 88 used to.

Pilot Error! I find most of my clients who break Series halfshafts tend not to be very proficient in driving non-synchronized transmissions.

My 109 SIII has a D60 in it!

Exactly! After Maurice and Spencer broke the frame on the Jeep-based prototype, they fixed that major design flaw in the military jeeps.

Except they still kept those pencil dick sized axles under the Jeep up until the Rubicon.

I love my Rover and as Phineas says, if the maintenance is kept up they're great. Sadly the '96 is considered the worst year for the D1. You will be constantly suprised what they can do, but better yet, other people will be even more suprised.
Not that there's anything wrong with the 'Yotas, great trucks but I love my Rover!

You also have to be fuckin' nuts to own one.

Cruiser. If its maintained it will be on the road longer without major repairs then that Rover will. 300k is pretty easy to get on a maintained cruiser.

I'm trying to come up with the cash for a93-97 Cruiser for my wife to replace her Honda Accord that the family has out grown. Just doen't expect either of those to get better then 17mpg.

I say toyota, not because I have owned either but rather because I am meeting with the owner of the rover tomorrow to buy it out from under you.

P.S. Thanks for the link to the nice rover.

Sincerely Frankie
