I have built a few in the past and am now doing a 1990 suburban , Not sure if your into stick shift trucks , but as others have sugested the NV4500 is the best choice for your application .
Problem with the allison is your going to need to go with a devorced mounted transfer , you will not have enough room .
As for the transfer case , a pre 93 np 205 would be the best choice , they are a right side drop for the front shaft .
You could get away with a Getrag , the NV4500's have the mounting holes as the earllyer Getrags and will bolt to a 205 .
Onlyy thing is either setup with a 205 are selling for a preimum , I have seen just np 205 and adapter sell for 1500 , and thats not rebuilt and you still need the trans .

I've been thinking seriously about starting to gather the parts to do this swap in my K5. I want an auto tranny though. Does anyone know the preferred year and model Allison to use?

No, the oil pan will be sitting on the front axle with stock springs. The 4" lift springs will let it clear but it is still close.

You just need the adapter plate to go to a GM trans. A lot of 4BT had them. I helped my friend put a 4BT with a sm465 into a 87 1 ton 2wd chevy.

Not from what I have seen. My friend's oil pan was setting on the differential with the stock springs when he first set the motor in.

k5 cummins blazer

I did a 1987 suburban and I used 3" springs to clear. Now I am doing a k5 and I will be using 4" springs cause I will be installing a dana 60. I will know for sure if it will clear by this weekend. Exracer3

CrewCab59 is correct...there are mounts and crossmember out there that do not require a lift at all...

Well, my colleague pointed out to me that the CrewCab59 fellow (or someone with an extremely similar screen name) offers Cummins swap motor mounts that utalize part of the GM mounts. He said if he did the swap he would modify his mounts to resemble more of the CrewCab59 mounts.

My 87 K30 has no front lift and clears the Dana 60 as well. I made my own mounts using second gen Dodge motor mounts.

Pic 1 looks like major engine setback, and that the crank pully is resting on the x-member? Also it clears, but how much uptravel do you have? Any pics of yer "kit".

I'm doing this right now on a 91 suburban using the
TN. DIESEL mount's and cross member with a
12 valve nv 4500/241 combo.

First off you WILL have to box the frame at least back
past the tranny cross member as it Will flex till the door's hit the fender's.

You will need to build a new front cross member as the bal. and
A/C comp will hit.
then notch and gusset the frame rail to clear the A/C comp.

It will need at least 6" of lift to clear the dana 60
and cross member with cross over steering.

Boxing the frame WRONG !

The front member only needs trim the lip off for the belt ,the A/C is fine where it is with very little trim or by the Mid mount A/C bracket.

Any kind of lift will work but to say a 6'' is need to clear the D60 is wrong, it will fit with no lift . The 1st gen crossmember is needed for crossover steering , the 2ng gen is for no lift .

Well then come by and show me how to get the front clip back on with the fender's over lapping the door's at the top.

On this burban the frame flexed enough
that the clip would not go back on till I boxed it with no weight
on the front axle.

The engine isn't set back , it clears the firewall .No the pulley isn't touching ,it's has the rear facing lip trim off so the belt can be taken off. With no lift and depend on shape you could have from 2" to 4" or until the bump stop hits the spring plate. The link is posted.
