alternator choices
Can we get a list of the DIRECT FIT (at least on the bottom ear) alternator replacements?
I know that a certain volvo truck will fit according to upnover, have pm'd him for that. What else? What all have people used? j

Direct fit? You could change from the Lucas to the Itailian made model that came on some years. A Motorola alternator has the same mounting ears but I wanted something I could get worked on anywhere and went with a 100 amp Delco from a '70s model Chevy truck. It was important to me to have the tach working so I got one with an "R" terminal and played around with the pully size until it read right. Very easy install with a couple of pieces of flat bar and some threaded rod to make it happen. It's been running for three years with no problems.

We just put a Delco alternator in LWB #1 and it was a direct fit. Had all the wires for the tach, no addl. plates of flat steel were needed. Only thing we did was change the pully.
I just watched my wife drive away in it or I'd get a part no. and post a pic. Tonight...

Here's some pics of my Bosch Volvo Truck alternator. It tested out at 140 amps. It has dual fans also.

upnover- good show! What's really cool is that alternator looks almost just like the one in my 240!

ok snap out of the food coma. I need some help here.
I got a dandy volvo 120 amp alternator, but silly me, I can't figure out the tach. I SUCK at alternators and wiring in general. I have the thing hooked up an running, 14.6 volts at idle no load, and plenty o amperage at idle. Now I am left with only nowhere to hook up the tach. I went through every fawking LR schematic to see if where the tach circuit is to no avail. Ok, so lets say that I can't hook up the tach to the alt? Is there a way to run it off of the coil signal? I did notice that the coil term and the tach wire are the same color code. The Alternater in question has a B+ terminal (main) and a D+ terminal (secondary) and what appears to be a ground post off one of the alternator chassis bolts. HELP!

Here's a post (for the archives) regarding alternate alternators. I originally posted this to the RRO (coil-sprung mailing list).
Alright, I removed my alternator today while making room to work on the hose replacement. Looked for some numbers and this is all I found on it. I *believe* that this is a GM alternator. 210237027 96A 60364 12V NEG If anyone wants to look this up and see what it is, be my guest. It comes with a V-belt pully so if you have a multi-groove it will need to be swapped (which I did). The electrical connection is very simple, it has 4-wires, only two of which are used. I forgot to write down which I used and where they went, but the tach and charge circuit work perfectly. Add this to the collective database.

I tried to look those #'s up on the Delco website with no luck. When you found that alternator, did you carry your lucas or magnetti up to the parts counter and compare to whatever they had in stock? Or did you pull it off some vehicle?

I got that alternator from Allan Johnson, a tech. at Land Rover Centerville (Utah).
He got it locally in SLC I think. Go to NAPA with those numbers and I'll bet they can find it. EDIT: Call these guys, I think this is where Alan got it. Action Alternator & Starter Salt Lake City, UT 84107 Phone:Ê (801) 266-2023
