anyone got a miller tig welder?

OK I got a friend who just picked up a few ( more than 5) tig welders at auction. They are all pulled out of service for some reason or another. They are all Miller combination single and 3 phase . Some have some auto switching fuctions. Not sure how old they are.

He said I could come over andpick one, and he would let me have it. Then if I get it to work I got to help him with others if I can.

I know the Ideal thing to do is look first, and then find some info to give you all. But when someone says free, you don't want to leave it sit. So anyone got any avice on what to look for. Or what you got and if you love it or wish you had something else?

No torch or pedels, this is just the machiene. But he did also get 3 boxes of hose for $5. I got a few here already. his wife is yelling to get stuf out of his house.

free is good, however my guess is that they are older large industrial units and getting the rest of the parts needed to get it up and running may end up costing more then a new small unit would brand new. worth checking out though.

what model number are they ?

Free is good. That said, on the older tig welders, points were used to generate the HF instead of an electronic box like the later ones. when these give out, they may or may not be replaceable. Then AC welding goes out the window if you wanted to do aluminum, and scratch start for DC is less than ideal.
If you can, borrow a torch and control and get some scrap and see how the box welds. I think if you find one in the pile that works, you've got a great deal.

I've got an old Miller 320 AB/P. Seriously old, but runs VERY well. There are repair shops that can recondition all of these old units to like new condition (mine was gone through before I bought it) and can do it reasonably too.

Nab one and bring it back to working condition. They are great machines. Even Sunray Engineering with all the bling stuff they build is using the same model I have after one of the new models circuit boards crapped out on them. They say they actually like it better than the new one.

Mitler in Ft. Wayne can help on all the parts you may need. They deal with some of the older stuff like that, if it is older.

Huh.......your first sentence leads me to belive that they might in fact be inverters (auto switching-1ph or 3ph)which would be very cool! Take some pics , and post or email them to someone who can.

hmmm...I think thats the kind we had at my old shop...do they sit about 5 ft tall? The one we had at our shop was a REAL old miller 300 (of some type) and it ran (and worked) VERY well...

They are just a little bigger than my Millermatic 110, about 2' x 3' x 1'. 2 handles on top instead of one since there alot hevier. Weather resistant fiberglass clamshell case. These are what are on most construction sites in a rack of 6.

I havn't got them running yet, but I did order a service manual. I may just have one fixed, and see what they did. Depends on what info I can get out of the manual.

BTW I am an electrician, so don't worry about me getting shocked by the capasitors in there. I may still get shocked, but I do know better.

I weld 60 millon dollar aircraft parts every day on a 30+ year old miller. The other four machine in my shop are new millers and every welder in the shop wants my machine. It has the most stable arc of them all but it does not have the amperage to match the new ones.

This thread is just over 3 years old... You'd probably have better luck calling miller.
