Tilt Column

Doing a Saginaw conversion, this truck is old had the steering box that the shaft goes all the way to the steering wheel, TS did not work, had an aftermarket ign switch no horn etc. I called the customer and suggested doing a GM tilt and solve a bunch of problems in one blow.
I went out to Justin's to fetch an S10 column, and he was out, so I trecked thru and found a good candidate, mid 80's Cherokee, still a GM part.
First step is to set it in the hole and fab up the upper mount, notice the rope to hold it in place.

The section you see bolted to the column is OEM, you cut the ears off, and fab new ones or it will hang too low. This is raised at least 2" from the ears that were on there. These are 2 sections of angle iron, welded on the OEM bracket

Here is the firewall side, the rusty section is where I removed the firewall mount that was on here, as you can see it was too far down, I have fabbed a lower mount using the cover that was on the old LC comumn for a template, it is bolted to the firewall on the inside here but not yet welded.

This unit also comes with a pair of U joints, one here, and the other on the gearbox so get the shaft also if you source one, the fat thing below the u joint is a rubber vibration damper, added bonus.

I'll either get a Grant, or a nice Chevy to go on it, although this is a comfortable wheel, if I could find a Toyota emblem to cover that up Hell I ought to pull it off and sell it to RockTaxi.......

When you get your column, you need to get the plugs that go to the switchs and as much wire as possible.
It's not as bad to wire in as this looks

One reason I like the GM, this is the ignition switch, lots of switched terminals for running acc. I know from memory the red is Batt. orange is acc. purple is starter, one is hot even when hitting the starter, HEI or ECM feed...

This is the Turn signal harness, if you have a pre 73, it's a direct wire in, if you have a newer and are running the stock amber TS on the rear it's a bit different., this system has the ability to run brake lights and hazards thru it if you want to. Plug visible in the background is the W/S wiper controls.

One thing I would like to add is that dont worry about getting a column with a key. And DONT pay the dude at the yard to rekey the switch for $60 either. A new ignition switch for my GM column was something like $20 at Napa autoparts. Installing it wasnt hard either.

Actually, what you mean is the lock & tumbler set and they are $16.55, not hard as long as you have a puller and the lock plate depressor, this one had no key.
The switch is the part with all the wires on it.

Now that you mention it.................................

Maybe! I have about 30 complete core boxes. I was mostly just trying to make sure that nobody tossed the cut ones, because I collect even the small parts like the side covers, shims and sectors.

Any progress on the 63 engine parts?

Hey Tex,
Have you figured out how to wire in the wiper switch? I've been meaning to try to figure it out by diagrams/ or see if it is even possible. IIRC one is a power supply type system and one is a ground type system.

Did the H/L dimmer clear the foot brake lever? The 73 column I put in mine, the ign switch and the brake slightly touch.

The kids steal Cherokees here cause the housing is plastic. They smash the housing to get to the ign and away they go.

Hmmmm, wonder if wifey would notice the steering missing from the Cherokee?

Texican,

What GM tilt columns are good length wise? I am looking at doing it for my FJ40 and I have been looking for a camaro or firebird mid seventies. It would help if I could look for many more models. ALSO, What do you do to make the shaft from the column to the PS box the correct length?

I would also be stoked to find someone who has figured this out. I have also been trying to figure out the wiring for the wipers, and havent gotten there yet. From what I have read, the motor on the 40 (I have wipers above the windshield) are grounded on the body, and hte GM wipers are grounded from the column. Soooo, some wiring finegaling with some relays is necessary. Thats about as far as I got. I have a wiring diagram on my site from when I started this project:
http://www.finespline.com/cruiser/wipers/index.html
Now that winter is coming, sounds like I should pick this project back up.

My column also grazed the pedal, so I took it out and bent it a tad and ground off some to clear.

Ill add to this thread instead of starting a new one ... moderators please yell if I should just start a new one.

I went with the straight s-10 column and Im using an ez generic harness ... anyway here are a couple of pictures of what Im working with

http://goonchild.blogspot.com/

and here is what I found on google somewhere.

In article <6g3n89$qg...@nnrp1.dejanews.com> Pfis...@IKON.com writes:
>I'm installing a 78 GM suburban 4X4 steering column into a 76 Toyota
>Landcruiser. I'm looking for the wiring pin-outs so I can incorporate the turn
>signal and head light control's.

From memory...

white: brake light switch
brown: hazzard flasher power
violet: directional signal flasher power
lt blue: left front light
dk blue: rt front light
yellow: left rear light
green: right rear light
black: horn switch

still need help with a few of the other wires (misc on the column plug, wipers and the rest of the long flat plug) if anyone can help thanks
