Great find at PnP ( Mass Air related )
So I was going to order a cheapo filter an adapter from E-bay and decided I didn't want to wait for shipping and I also felt that the adapter shown was kind of cheesy. So I called a few ricer shops and nobody had an adapter. I decided to hit PnP before I ordered and found this little gem.
I got it off of an 83' BMW 528. Adapts your existing Mass Air sensor to a K & N type filter. It comes with flush mount screws, gasket, adapter, and a filter adapter that will change the stock adapter O.D. from 2.75" to a little over 3". All for a whole 1.00. For all the guys who are going to say just order it from E-bay, like I said the adapters look cheesy and so do the filters. I just rebuilt my engine, I'm not going to trust a 5.00 filter from E-bay. Filter I bought from my local ricer shop and is re-usable and looks af the same quality as K & N

So, do all 83 BMW 528s have this? Or did you catch a ricer car which had one? Seems like a pretty rare little find there...
But, it does look better than the e-bay ones, the round-square transition is beveled nicely, and all. |

If someone can confirm this is a stock BMW part, that officially makes this pretty cool budget tech

Got it
Saw the post this morning went to 5 different salvage yards no luck. Went to a specific BMW parts recycler and got This "adapter" (IF you want to call it that) it is slick and it is a perfect fit. I backed out the bolts On my MAS Got it all Fixed up And It is going to be nice. Now all I need is the filter. He charged me 10 buck though. An 84 Bmw dosen't work FYi. Thanks For the tip!!!

Sorry to change direction a bit, but what air filter are people running for 22r (carbs)
Do any of the paper elements cut it? (fram, etc) I always assumed the cotton gauze units were better in any application. (advertizing exploited me!)

the best filter to run is a stock Toyota filter from the dealership. Yes, they're pricey. get over it. If you actually drive your truck in the dirt, then you'd better not run a cotton/oil filter, IMHO. They let just too much dirt in for the .005HP gain that you'll never notice anyway...

I stumbled through picknpull today, half off day. Had no idea what my MAS measurements were but I found two 80's bmws, one 6 series, one 7 series. Both had this adapter. I wasn't sure if the pattern was correct but I figure for a $1 I can't go wrong. Well, I can tell you all that the size is perfect, the pattern is off though. The holes line up side to side, however top to bottom is another story. I think I can get away with drilling new holes though. I'll post some pics if I decide to make it work.

Nice find Chopperman!
I used the cheapo Spectre adaptor available at most Kragen Autoparts stores. I think it was like $6. I also bought one of their cheapy cotton gauze cone filters for $20. I agree the cotton gauze isn't ideal for dirt, but these are readily available and easy to fit. Just clean and oil them periodically and they will do a fine job. |

They make those little sock/k&n condom thingys too. I really don't like open filter elements though.
