8" WELDABLE pipe cap...CA
I live in San Diego, and searched for a week now to find a diff cover. The only thing I can find are CAST
pipe caps. I would rather not deal with the popping and spattering...plus they CRACK. I drove to San Marcos and Escondido searching at 5 places. Had 2 differnt places call thier supplier & no one can find it. Any suggestions... P.S. Next option is to fab it myself, not a problem, but I only have a TIG...it takes a while. Plus no bender...or propane/asetylne to preheat and bend manually.

The 8" weldable pipe caps I have always used are cast. I have never broken one and they are very easy to weld. They are called 8" Weldable Pipe Caps. I got the last one at Windustral in Rocklin, CA for about $17.00.

I got mine from the McMaster Carr catalog. Simple to install. I mig welded mine on. No spatter here. I cut mine in half so I can use one on the rear and one on the front. I guess you could gusset the top if you are worried about breaking yours. Good luck.

Hmmmm. Could be, but are you sure its not just hot rolled steel? Like when they took a disc of 1/4" thick steel and had it red hot and shoved it into a hobbing die to form the caps? Seems more cost effective to make 'em that way.

There is a big difference between Cast Iron and Cast Steel. Most Butt-Weld carbon pipe caps are ASTM A234 WPB or WPC. This is a wrought steel spec. with a max carbon content of 0.30% which is easily welded by all common methods.

Bringing back an old topic here.
Does anyone know where I might be able to source one of these now? I can't find anything local (Delaware) bigger than 6" and McMaster/Carr is now charging $40 for one.Anyone other online sources? |

I wouldn't use one anymore now that these are so readily avialable and cheap.
http://www.trail-gear.com/trail-armor.html I just took a piece of 1/4 steel, cut it to about the shape that would fit the back of the diff and formed it with a torch and hammer on my concrete floor cuz I don't have an anvil. It works GREAT! It cost me all of $0.29. Plus, why add all that weight and a mud collection basket to your rig? Chass ct

2. I am willing to bet they do not weigh that much more then the Trail-Mart one. Besides unsprung weight helps you from flopping. 3. Duh, you make a drain slot in the bottom. I have been running them for about six years and I have never broken one from hitting anything, had it fill up with dirt and mud and they are cheep!!!!
