Cool Diff armor

Finally got around to hacking that pipe cap in half and making some armor for these axles that I'm installing.

Cutting the cap:

Front axle complete:

Rear axle complete:

Thumbs up

They look really good Ken! You should have given me one for the front of my truck though instead of putting one on your back axle.

Which brings up the question. Why add diff armor to the rear axle? You never really bash into it like you do with the front axle, and there isn't a cover to peel off like with Dana axles. So, why do it?

Exclamation

This started out as a weld-on cap for 8" steel pipe. It's actually a little too small, you gotta do some grinding on the inner circumference to get it to fit snugly. It also sticks out a little too far if you just cut it in half, I torched off about 3/4" all the way around the edge.

Yeah, Harry... my rear axle has a few scars on it, still learning how to avoid the big rocks, now I don't have to worry quite as much. I suppose it's overkill to do the rear, but I had the other half lying there on the bench next to my stripped '87 housing, so what the heck.

Thread is old, but how do you guys cut your diff covers in half.
I'm having trouble getting it to fit in a drop saw without welding something to it, to fit in the clamp.

saw's all, only took a few min. I too cut about 1/2 inch off all the way around it.
then I put in on the floor and hit it with a BFH to spread it out a little bit.

They do not have them at Blue Collar unless they got them in on Saturday (I was there Friday).
I cut them in half and cut the rim on my horzinal bad saw set up-right with the little table that came with it ($149. metal bandsaw from H-F). Takes a little time but it works. I got the last one at Windustral in Rocklin for $17!!!!!!!!!!

As far as doing the rear axle and putting a protector of some sort on it. I thought the same thing why do it I mean I'm always going forward right. Well after Johnson Valley and coming back with my rear housing showing some battle scars, I'll be putting somekind of protection on there now. Just my experience.

I'm starting mine tomorrow and don't have my torch around. Since I'm impatient I'm cutting mine in half with a grinder with a thin cutting wheel. So I bought bunch of wheels. Hope it works, we shall see.

Wow.. this is old.. Don't forget, Ken has got same seriously thick caps there... A freaking skud would bounce off of those.. A thinner cap would be a heall of a lot eaiser to cut for those who don't have that sweet wet saw in their home garage..

oh man
a thinner walled 8" pipe cap would be awsome!!!
i've hacked a few of these 5/16' thick bad-boys apart and al the clean-up w/ the grinder is lame

as far as the rear axle goes, the caps look pretty good and it would be kind of unsymetrical not to do both

plus if ya get jiggy enough with it you might be able to bash a stock housing into the ring gear?

i've never met anyone who has on a yota but anything is possible
