its the only place you have to go through that doesn require a good tug, rockerpanels, or 35's. such a shame. I actually built my rockers just for gate keeper since it had a habit of grinding on min with 33's
RIP Gatekeeper. Now its just a flat section of fireroad.

Then you have the club rivalries, all clubs claim to be unified but no one chages or makes sacrifices, where one club claims sponsorship of a trail and then dubs themselves the king of one trail or another ordering others around instead of working with all users of the trail. this isnt an exclusive thing but many seem to think it should be. this drive towards continuing to divide all factions will be the demise, those who are still trying to make things happen are wearing out.... Dont believe me read some of Del's recent postings hes fed up with the politics between clubs, the bickering on small details and the unwillingness of all clbs to make a few sacrifices in the name of saving the trail.

It would be nice if you guys would chime in on the other thread with some support for cruzilla and Del. They're taking a lot of heat right now for the way this went down, and it would be nice to know that their efforts to help us are still being appreciated.

I personally witnessed some of the hill eroding lines [high side on the right, Rubithon '04] being taken that lead to this event, and IMO to the extent that they stop that one line from being an option we will all be better off at not being attacked by the greenies. I don't think they're out to level the whole thing, just trying to take a stab at some better drainage.

there was an interesting point brought up on the main thread: maybe if gate keeper is that tough then J**P can't bring in their 20 stock rigs so the big execs can have their fun. J**P is big money. we're not.

Makes me wonder why any "wheelers" still support(buy) jeep/dodge/products. For all the chit about boycotting the Sierra Club, etc...

And of course it's not just the Rubicon. BLM is throwing around the same hints in Moab. Read the Environmental Assessment for the renewal of the Special Use Permit for Easter Jeep Safari and others. (http://www.blm.gov/utah/moab/) It's clear they absolutely support renewing the permit. But they make clear there are problems that need addressed, too.

I only got to run the Rubi once when I still lived in CA, back in 2000. Gatekeeper was the first obstacle I remember on the trail, but it didn't look near as tough as some of the pictures from recently. I guess it all about money, if the Jambo can't get through, blow it up. We all build our rigs to be more and more capable, and there are going to be less and less trails to use them on, which only increases the amount of traffic on trails.

Going through Gatekeeper is definitely a moment you remember.
I will never forget that morning, and the friends I shared it with...

Got this e mail from Bob Brown, fellow Toys on the Rocks member, yesterday. Seems he witnessed the event.

Kent....
Not all of the big rocks were reduced to rubble...actually four large rocks were blasted. Two at the very start that were in the middle of the trail, and two up where the pinch area was located. This was done to prevent the massive erosion that has been taking place in the area. 400lbs of Boom! Made a pretty big Boom and a bit of a mushroom cloud. The effort was a combo of Forest Service, DOT, Parks and Rec with reps from FOTR and even TOTR. Was a pretty interesting thing to see....Bob

Hopefully the paving isn't as bad as it initially sounded.

Kent

You all have to little faith in mother nature. Those that felt the blasting was a nec. act to sustain future trail use with less enviro impact are so , so kidding themselves. Nature can and will totally change whatever is there after blasting. They may think it is fixed or whatever but
MARK MY WORDS :
That section is gonna be twice as nasty and with bigger ledges after a few winters , it aint gonna stay like they left it , no way , it's gonna erode and what ever new rocks they unearthed are gonna be there waiting. It is gonna happen just to fawk with the FS. Then they will say , shit , that did not work , must blast a better road bed and stabilize it with curbs and gutters.
I pray for one hellaova winter that just tears it up.
