Its a little easier to read if you use courier font and the correct spacing using 'black' text.

Any theories why the d60 chromo shaft is nearly 2x the strength of the stocker while the d44 chromo only has the stock shaft by about 800lb-ft??? Possible flaw in the material? Just the shear magnitude of material in the d60 shaft as compared to the 44?

I guess I'll pick up some longfields and have him treat my hubs but forget about the output. Anyone know if bobby has plan to test gears? I'd love to see the difference between 4.10's and 5.29's both with and without cryo. They should even throw a set of 5.71's in there just for fun to prove that whole debate once and for all. I know that the set-up would effect the strength but just have one of the best out there set up each diff to minimize the effects.

One theory is that the only chromo shafts tested where Yukons . . . I'll let that speak for itself.

I have been running the shit out of my Alloy USA D44 chromo shafts and havn't had a problem. I winched/drove out of Sun Bonnet in front wheel drive on Saturday putting quite a beating on those suckers with no problems. The mud and roots around here didn't pose any problems either. I know that whats in my truck is WAY strong than the stock shafts I have broken.

When we tested the flanges at the jambo. we used 5/16 bolts i guess they were to small. When we retested the 4340 drive flange we used 3/8 grade bolts because they will fit in the holes without the cone washer. I don't think the drive flange will ever fail the shaft will break first. Iam thinking maybe not a good idea for us to build parts stronger than our shafts.

Is that machine not set up to do rear axles?
What about CVs?
Bobby, if I sent you a rear axle and cv could/would you break them? I am curious to see some stock numbers for different trucks.

Bobby could settle a lot of debates! I would like to see the 9" and other rear axles. Any teasers of what to expect next bobby?

Here I go, bringin an old thread to the top.

So I'm curious how this machine works, obviously you are applying a torsion load to one end of the shaft and hold the other in place.

How are you developing torques of 12000 ft-lb?

How is the shaft held to the testing machine? especially D44/D60 stuff, are you just connecting two stub shafts with a u-joint in the middle?

Maybe it's been discussed, and I suck at searching, but didn't come up with anything.

No, that's ok. Good question. The machine has a hydraulic cylinder, one end is attached to the frame and the other end is fixed to a double 80 chain. When the cylinder pushes out it turns a big sprocket that is fixed to the frame by a shaft and 2 bearings. One end of the axle is fixed to the table of the machine. The other end of the axle is hooked to the sprocket that turns as the cylinder pushes outward. We use side gears welded to a fixture at both ends of the axles. As far as foot pounds we take the hydraulic PSI pressure times the diameter of the cylinder times the sproket diameter and then divide the sprocket in half, that will give you the foot pounds of torque. After we built the machine we took it to a local hydrolic place, they converted PSI pressure to foot pounds of torque for us. We also had the engineers of the company that builds our shafts double check their calculations.

We use to test the shafts by using a u-joint and an outer stub shaft and inner shaft combination. But it got to expensive and sometimes the joint would break and not the shafts. So now as you can see we just use 1 shaft with a pin thru the ears. Of course this is only straight not turned at an angle like the birfield.

This is the way we test our birf and axle combination. Of course when we break them we put down the 1 1/4 bullet proof glass shield.

One gage shows the foot pounds of torque and the other gage shows the twist degrees as the axle twists before it breaks. Hope this helps.

Good info.... Too bad you don't have any info on Superior Axle and Alloy USA 35 spline CrMo for Dana 60 axles... I'm curious to see how strong they are compared to the Yukon and the Longfield Dana 60 CV.

So birfs are tested at an angle and u-joints at no angle? Wouldnt that give the u-joints a big advantage? Or did I just read that wrong..
