Project TURBO MOGRUNNER official build up thread

Hey gang. Like the title says, turbo power in a 4runner with mog axles.

I sold my old wheeler (81 red pickup), and went on a shopping spree. Here is what I have done in the last two months:

Note: I changed my forum name to something less vehicle specific than 81snowtoy. I now go by "RockRogue".

Pretty nice 4runner for $800, eh? had a 3.0, has a moonroof too.

Assembling the 20" double beadlocks.

46" Michelin XLs. said to be 99% tread... a little less when they showed up : (
And my girlfriend Tosha.

Engine donor ready for the knife, 89 supra turbo (7MGTE with a 5 speed)

yank

This just won't do.

Yank!

All clean, ready for new stuff.

Need to make a custom tranny to get the 7MGTE in place of the 3VZE if you want to have a transfer case behind it.

Here is all the R154 (2wd) internals, with the R150 (4wd) main shaft.

Trannys are actually fun to work on.

Just need to put in shifters and put the case together.

yep. 404s. Rebuilds for NATO until they stopped using 404s...

Thanks Dan and Chris for helping get my 250lb wheel/tire sets onto my 700lb axles.

8" TJ coils rear, 10" TJ coils front, bilstein 14" 5125 moutned on the links Extra travel) at all 4 corners. I will run a 3 link ront and a 3 link rear. Both set up with y links. All links will be 2x2 or 2.5x2.5 box tube, .250 wall. Rod ends are all going to be currie johnny joints with 1.25 threaded shanks.

If anyone has other ideas, feel free to share. The main reason I am going with 3 links is for space (fuel tank in rear, engine/driveline in front). And square tube because it is cheap and easy to fab (unless you want to bend it).

I was going to do air shocks, but I ran out of money. air shocks would be like $1200, and my coils and shocks will be less than $600. And I will have poly bumps and limiting straps (probably 2 double wrapped straps at each corner... I have about 2600lbs of unsprung weight).

So, R154 gears onto R150 mainshaft into R150 housing? Any write up you followed or did you just start taking shit apart?

Yeah, you got the swap described. NO, no write up. I had a thread a while back that ended with: "R154 gears on r150 shaft in r150 housing. it works."

So I started taking stuff apart. And I broke a main shaft output bearing, and a 3rd gear piece... not a synchro or the gear. I dunno what it is called. But I had two of both of those, so I used the R150 ones.

It was a big learning experience.

So the 154 bellhousing will be bolted to the 150 case with the 154 gears on the 150 shaft... I thought I had read somewhere there was a difference in the length of the input section of the shaft and the depth of the bellhousing or maybe that was on the newer R150's? Good to see you making it happen.

7MGTE weighs 440lbs, and I do not know the weight of a 3VZ

There is practically no aftermarket support for the 3VZ engine.

There is a plethora of aftermarket support for toyota's J series engines, especially the 7MGTE and JZ series engines. With parts from boxes and a stock bottom end (rebuilt) you can exceed 500 HP. Stock it has 250HP and 254 lbft of torque. I think it is worth a few extra pounds.

And this 4runner never had a 22RE, so I guess i could have swapped one in, but that would be lame. "big" power is like 200HP.

most people just cut the 3vz bellhousing and the supra bellhousings in half, then weld the front half of the supra housing to the rear of the 3vz housing.
heres a kickass site for your swap.

I I wren't a gentleman, I would type a big long string of crude explitives to describe daniel and his customer service. I dealt with him in spring and summer of 2006 (one order). So if you heard he improved since then, it could be. EDIT: He is no longer in business. But the wheels hold air and are tough.

I got my tires from there too. I wouldn't recommend getting tires there unless you can pick them out in person. I was misled a little on the condition.

lilredrover- how dare you! jk

MXMW54- already been through that site. i like it. thanks though

Java- I got these axles from MAC at www.exaxt.ca. Mac (Robert Macdonald), is an excellent person to do business with. And he also machined my pinion conversons, and they are fantastic.

What is the configuration problem that leads you to using this transmission setup? Does the R150 not bolt to this motor? I thought the r150 and r154 used the same face to bell pattern ? And the gearing in the 154 is worse right?
