How to: NP 205 twin stick CHEAP!

First of all, I know its been done before. I found information and pictures on several websites and manufacturers sites:

I found enough information to figure out how to do it. I took a lot of pictures as I did it. It works great and I'll post the pictures. I did the mod to a spare 205 I had for parts I will move the setup into my truck during the next week or so. This particular 205 is a chevy from a standard transmission with granny low (t465?)
This is how I got it no Idea what year etc. it is.
Stock shift patterns:





First the parts we are dealing with:


Then begin disassembly:


Bolt detail

Now we can play with the shift rails independently.






Ok now we get on with modding the shift rails.

Ok now the shaft is out:


now mark where the material is to be removed I gave it a shot of primer hoping to photograph it better




Then reinstall the shaft the way you took it out.

now lets see what shift patterns we can get:





Heh I forgot to take a pic of RWD high and 4X4 high but trus me they are still there.

Now lets make a shifter for this bad boy.


Its only a 1/2 inch bolt but its all I could find on a sunday, I'll get a proper 9/16 bolt tomorow.

Nice write up
I like use of 2 stock shifters to make the twin stick.

To make it easier to read, can you edit and stack the pictures vertically, so it's not so wide?

I fixed the pictures, it looked fine at home but when I saw it at work I could see what you meant.


I got the bolt in it today but left the camera at home.
I took the floor out of the blazer and looked it over it has rubber plugs where the freeze plugs go and the detent bolt for the FWD shift rail has a place to plug something in (4X4 light?) its a turbo 400 setup so the adaptor is wider, and the current shifter is bent different to be more forward. I dont see too much trouble working on it in the truck other than lining up the split pin in the shift fork. I want to extend my shifters and move them towards the driver as well. I'll do that as I go along trial and error

I was getting flamed for my 8" front 10" rear body lift in another thread.
I'm running 2 frames in my k5 I have the drivetrain in the lower with a 4" spring lift. The upper frame is pruned off just ahead of th cab mounts. Its not a rock crawler.

I had my camera today
I need maybe 1 more washer. The bolt is long enough that it bottoms out so I dont need to use loctite on it.

I removed the floor panel in my k5 and scraped some of the crud off my 205.
its not as accesable as I had hoped but I think I can do it in position. note the rubber plug where it was a frost type plug on the other transfer case. Anyone know if its stock that way? or has this been rebuilt before? I think the frost plug wwas more secure.

Thanks for the write up. I'm thinking about picking up a spare 205 and doing this mod to it and also changing the front output shaft to a 32 spline.

Although what you did probably works just fine it should be 7/16" grind on both areas. It's just the throw the rail moves with one shift. No benefit I can see to do them different.
