Trail-Gear T-Case Assembly Video

In an effort to make it as easy as possible to assemble your low range transfer case, Trail-Gear is creating a series of video assembly instructions. Instructions will cover Samurai 6.5 gears, Toyota 4.7 gears and Toyota dual case installs.

The first video shows the assembly of a 4.7 transfer case. This video is a work in progress. Comments about how to make the video more helpful would be appreciated. I am currently working on a synchronized sound track with information such as bolt size and torque specs.

Video run time is about 12 minutes.

I suggest briefly displaying the torque setting of the housing bolts....something like bold red letters or something...
You could also cut out some time by not displaying every single housing bolt being installed by hand.

Great idea, I could fade it while the bolts are being installed.

so you don't have to clearance the case with your 4.7 gears?

Yes, you do need to clearance the case. The case used in the shoot was already clearanced. I have another case that I'll be using to show how to clearance using a grinder. I also need to cover cutting the shift rails.

no sealer on the gaskets?

thanks for the video.

Gret video, narration would be good. I also think torque specification would be good also. Maybe a list at the beginning of what tools would be needed to perform the operation just so people don't start tearing into the project and go damn I don't have (x) tool.

I would also reference the fact that the case would need to be prepped and that the shafts would need to be cut.

Another thing you might want to make is a video on how to take apart the case and what to inspect for.

Great video. I haven't torn into mine yet so these are things that I think may help others with.

Thats awesome.

I have always preferred trail gear's installs and instructions. This is going to help a lot of people.

We did not use anti-seize or silicone during the filming because it makes it hard to back up and reshoot without a lot of cleanup. Silicone is the way to go on building a case but it plays hell with retakes. We did the whole procedure 3 times from start to finish and many of the steps over and over again till the shot looked right.

I'll get mention of silicon in there somewhere.

Is this to convert a forward to top shift case? If so, good stuff!

Thanks,

Al

Great video!
Can we expect to see some videos on a basic front axle rebuild (would be great to show off some of your trail-gear products) and ring and pinion set-up in the near future?

Yes, I plan to have the ruff version cut next week. We start filing the dual adapter video on Monday. On Wed I have a voice over person starting the recording of the sound track.

My only comment to add to the ones above is that you don't really need to show the guy screwing in every bolt, just have him put the bolts in the holes and the cut to the next scene with them already torqued.
x2. If a person can't figure out what to do once the bolt it started in the hole, they're screwed anyway

Well I edited out most of the bolt turning. Each bolt gets just two turns before I cut to the next bolt. I figure that way they will know what way to turn it.

Maybe I should do this just on the first bolt, then quickly show the position of the other bolts.

Or I could get seven hands in the shot, each installing a bolt all at the same time.

I like that idea - in areas where a series of bolts need to be installed (like the rear housing section), show installation of the first bolt, then change to a view of the area with animation dots showing the remaining bolts in the series to install, and mayebe even the order to install/torgue them. Should cut out a bit of time, and be pretty easy to follow as a viewer.
