Quick Stretch, a Samurai build on yota's and 36's.

Figured i should start a thread so i could show what i'm up to, and so i could ask questions in here instead of starting new threads each time...

I've been wheeling my samurai on 31's, yj's in rear, ruf, locked front and rear on stock axles with hi steer and kick power steering, 1.3 and 4.9's. I've been wanting more wheelbase and i've had yota axles laying around for about 2 years now.
I'm in college, away from home, so i'm trying to finish this project over winter break. I have until jan. 22nd.
I rent one side of a barn in the middle of nowhere and thats where most of the build takes place. Its only 5 min away from my house and has power, but only one small section of concrete and its not level. The rest is dirt, but i'm gona get some doors and sawhorses to make some nice workbenches.

Heres a link of the old stuff for sale: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=642740

Now, i am planning on a front frame stretch, 2x4 rectangle, 1/8 inch wall. I have 86 4x4 yota rear springs for the front, about 48 inches long with a 5 inch offset pin. I will mix in some of my ruf pack springs. I am keeping the shackle up front. Axle will be moved about 7-9 inches forward.
I will be going with a tube front clip. I am still stuck on steering, i am just going to build the suspension, then figure out if i have room for a yota ifs box, if not im going with a single ended hydro cylinder.
I'm also trying to get a mount set up for a future winch. I want it set in the frame rails like art (nczuk) did on his popsicle rebuild.

In the rear, i am going to keep my yj's, but i will be putting the shackle on the rear bumper and raising the front mount so its not a rock hanger anymore. I will need to build a trackbar also. Springs will be mixed leafs from front and rear yj's.
Right now i plan on chopping the rear of the body and floor at the seam behind the seats after the step up. I will tube it out, adding onto my existing rockrat cage and connecting to my rocksliders. I might do a comp cut though and keep some body. Depends on the rust situation. I dont really like doing body work, so i will most likely chop it.
Gas tank will just be raised up, axle will be moved about 5-6 inches back.

My neighbor can get me all the free pipe i want. I plan on using sched. 10 pipe for most stuff, but sched. 40 for the top bars of the rear cage. Dont get started on the pipe/tube debate, the passenger and driver are covered with a hrew cage build by rockrat and thats all that matters.
I usually go to the steel supply yard and pick through their dumpsters. If i take alot, they charge me scrap metal prices, something like 40 cents a pound. I get all my steel plate for mounts, guessets, or whatever basically for free.
I use a 110SP Plus lincoln and i am borrowing a hf bender. I plan on buying a hf 14inch cutoff saw and hopefully i get good at notching with it.
My budget it 0 dollars. I think i can do it if i sell my old stuff.

Well, my progress so far..
I've got both axles and driveshafts pulled, rear bumper off, skid plate off.

I've got all three yota axles apart. I have two rears with 4.10 and a front with 4.30. All are 4cyl 8 inch diffs and 55wms (not ifs rear). I am putting a 4.10 up front for now also, and will run 4.10 gears until i get a job over summer. Then come 5.29's and a front lockright.
Rear diff is getting welded tomorrow.
I have already cut the drain plugs out of both axles. I still need to get some 3x2 inch 3/16 plate to weld in. I didnt feel like doing a full shave, just got rid of the plug and ring.
I ordered a small trailgear diff guard, a large diff guard, and some axle gussets. I have set of rat adapters coming from a user on here. I will order some yota poly spring bushings tonight.
I am going on a road trip to get some 36's and 15x10 rims next week.

Thats about it for now, I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow night. Maybe show the shaved yotas, but otherwise nothing too exciting yet.

Going to 36's you'll also need to add 6.5 gears in the t-case. Good luck on your build. Looks like you've done your homework.

Do you think even with 4.9's and 5.29 axle gears i will still need the 6.5's?

I am very happy with my 31's, 3.73's, and 4.9 gears. I actually wouldn't want to be much lower. I am at 66:1 now, and with 4.10's i'll be at 72:1. With 5.29's i will be at 94:1.

If i do a proportion of crawl ratio to tire size i get:

(66:1 / 31) = (x / 36) with x being a equal crawl ratio on 36's,

I get 76.6:1

So, i think 94:1 will be alright with the added weight of 36's?

Or is this method completely wrong?

Thanks.

Well, looking at your sig, you are running 36's, 5.29s and a 6:1. EFI, i am guessing you have a 1.6, so you have a little more power.

How do you like your setup?

Okie's right my stock 1.3 needs every bit of my 6.5's and my 5;89's to turn my 36"s even though the sidewall says 38.5

Well crap....

Owell. We'll see what happens...

On with the build.
Got the zuk axles torn apart, both diffs packaged for shipping and got the rear bumper packaged. I already sold that stuff.

I made a couple trips to the barn and back to get all my tools there, and now i am waiting for stuff i bought to show up.

Tomorrow i will prolly burn out the spring bushings out of the yota springs, and get some steel plate and rectangle tube if the supplier is open.
I might also finish prepping the yotas. I have cut everything off them, i just need to grind some of the nicks down and get them prepped for paint.

Either you have a bank of batteries or a really long extension cord

I'm running a GRS II T-case with 5.29's on 36" tires with a weak a$$ed 1.3, and it does pretty good.
BUT, for the price, you can't beat the deal on the 6:1's!!!

Well heres and update of the past week or two.

Got tires and rims from chicago area:

Heres the samurai as it sits in the barn:

And the mobile workshop in my backyard haha. It has axle and stuff on it because i cant keep this stuff in the garage for more than a day:

I picked up 8 beadlock discs for 50 bucks. I dunno if they will work right, but the price was right:

Drain plugs cut and replaced:

Pretty Smooth:

Otherwise, i got the rear carrier out and got the ring gear off. I am going to a buddies house to weld it up with his arc welder.
I picked through the garbage at a steel yard and got a ton of free plate for spring mounts, gussets, tabs, whatever. Sizes ranging from 1/8-3/8 thick stuff. I also got some nice 2x2 square for a crossmember for the traction bar. I still need to order my 2x4 tubing for the frame stretch and rear bumper/shackle mount.
I also still havent gotten the darn spring bushings out of the yota springs, hopefully i will do it tomorrow. The poly bushings did come today.

Otherwise, i am still waiting on stuff to get shipped in. Hopefully alot of it comes tomorrow. Then i can get the axle gussets welded on, axles painted, and totally back together by monday.

One question though...
When taking the yota ring gear off, there is a metal peice between each set of two ring gear bolts. It has tabs on it bent up to keep the bolts from loosening. Do you guys reuse these things? I was just going to use locktite.
Also, does anyone know the torque specs on ring gear bolts and bearing cap bolts?

THanks guys!

Yes you do. Sounds like you have done plenty of research and an awsome game plan. Can't wait to see your beast finished. Let's get real, what are your plans when finished? After what that thing could do on 31's your just going to get in trouble with 35's. Too bad your not closer, I would come and help. It would be nice being the helping hand recieving direction for a change. Good luck.
