Bad Ass Rhino build!

Ok well like I have said the jeep is way too big for competitive rock crawling (if you don't know my jeep, trust me it is too big) so a new buggy is in order. Something lower, more nimble, narrow and 4 wheel steer.

Here are the specs

2 Seater rear engine chassis (I will build)
small block chevy
th350 divorced 205 twin sticked
linked suspension with Evo heims
F.O.A Coilovers
Planetary axles
4 wheel steer


Ok here is what I have gathered up so far

16" remote res F.O.A's



Now for the body, for the last 2 years I have been saying if I ever build a comp buggy that I wanted to use a Yamaha Rhino Body. So I looked around and found a company called Fullbore Innovations that makes awesome looking racing plastics for these things.

So with a few phone calls and some emails I have hooked up with the guys Fullbore and they were interested in the project. So they have shipped a body kit including a hood, cowl, rear fenders, and tail gate. They should clear customs by the end of this week or next so for now I will post some pics of their Fullbore race rhinos to show you what the panels look like.

And once again I would like to thank Fullbore Innovations for their support on this project and the upcoming season.

I think these panels will look great on a compact buggy with 4 wheel steer.


I have had these axles now for 6 or 7 weeks but I am waiting for delivery on some Spicer planetary axles, if the Spicers do not show up by saturday I will be using these Carraro's

so here is the specs on the Carraro's for now
16:1 ratio, 55 Degrees steering and integrated double ended ram.

I sold the axles out of the jeep so the plan is to put them in the jeep to beat on.

Thanks man, as soon as the body show up I hope to start bending some tube. Chassis will be mostly 1.5" .120 DOM with some CREW tube mixed in.

Its funny Grant from fullbore was by my house sunday and told me about selling a set of plastic for a planetary buggy being built in Canada and I figured from your last build it must be yours. The teardown and pictures of the planetaries you posted was some of the most interesting reading Ive seen on pirate.

Thanks, and don't worry I will finish the write up on those axles as I get them ready for the jeep. Grant has been great to deal with and he has treated me really well.

We have a hard time getting sponsors up here and being up in Canada you don't expect most of the U.S suppliers to show as much support because most of the big media and events are in the U.S, but Grant stepped up and really listen to what I had to say and we are hoping to make some Raush Creek events this year with the new buggy.

Thanks, it is going to be interesting to put this combination together for sure. Both axles are center pinion so working the drive line in will take some work and I also have to be aware of the tires when building the chassis because @ 55 degrees turn front and rear on a 2 seater stuff is bound to get in the way.

No brakes, I will have to fab up a pinion brake. will be welded WMS is 65"

This is why I have been waiting on the Spicers, if they come through this saturday they have wet breaks, and front locker. But I don't want to wait any longer so if the Spicers are not here I am going to go with these.

Plus I have a few sets of the Carraros so spare parts won't be an issue which is a bonus with the price of parts and fabing up a pinion brake and welding the diff is not that big of deal any way.

i think Case and Ford use that axle so if you do need parts it shouldn't be hard to find.

the spicers would be the key. they are just plan beef.

what were these for originally? Their north american site sucks and many of the pdf links are broken for things like Telehandlers and 4wd loaders, etc. Do you have a weight on a steering axle yet?

how do these compare to the spicer axles other than missing a locker and having wet brakes?

May be a cool alternative to rocks if they arent too heavy or expensive.

Case, Ford, John Deere these ones are found in just about every brand. They are still super strong but ya the spicers are definately a little better.

I got enough sets of the carraros now that I can tear one or two totally down and keep it for parts. best part is all the parts interchange from front to rear and side to side so one axle torn down is a ton of spare parts.

I look forward to your buggy as well, I love those style rigs and their wheelin.

Just want to see how it is set up and how it is serviced if something breaks.

These are all brand new never installed but the specs were for John Deere 5000 series tractors. They way roughly 600 pounds I have not been able to get an accurate weight but I will.

The spicers are a heavier axle and just less work because the brakes locker and 1410 pinion yoke is already on them.

Nice thing with this type of axle is you don't have to spend big money on a transfer case to get the gearing or gears for the rear ends, or the steering ram, or to get it to turn 50 degrees. It is all there, and the planetaries take a ton of strain off of the rest of the drive train so chance of breakage is on any parts prior to the pinion is way less.

It's actually pretty easy. If you could see a pic from the other side, it's very similar to a ford 9". The third member unbolts from the housing and comes right out. Obviously you pull the planetaries off first, then the axles out. Much more simple then the spicers, just not as nice.
