This is recent. What about the money from the 36 million green stickers sold before that? And will it continue? How can we keep the money coming? Does anyone know the process in which the con receives money and are we contacting those individuals to ensure it does? Everytime effort is made by third party's to improve the trail instead of having the money we paid to do this it goes somewhere else. It is great we care enough to do this but to what ends? Who can I contact to make sure my taxes etc.. go to local trails? Thanx

FWIW, my wife took her Jeep down to the Placerville DMV last week and dual registered it. She had to go back home to get the title, but after that, it was easy. No problem, her Jeep is dual registered now. Mine is next.

Thank you for posting that info John......I need to head to DMV to do the same. I would have never thought to take the title. Did she HAVE TO take the Jeep, or just the title?

**edit, I just talked to Barb

I'm not sure, but you can ask these questions at OHMVR meetings, or off OHMVR staff.

I know that OHMVR grants are generally given out annually (this year is an exception because of State Bill 742), but that in lieu fees are given out biannually, and each county receives funds according to the results of the fuel tax audit.

I also know that the Division is always on the lookout for property acquisition (though this has become quite complex, politically). Acquisition of past properties, development of SVRA facillities, sustenance of OHMVR staff... all of these are part of the story.

The Rubicon Trail receives money from many different sources (Hotel taxes, in lieu fees, RTP grants, and more), and working with DOT now, I expect that we'll have MUCH better tracking and accountability of those fees. With DOT in charge, there is higher priority on spending allocated funds, and pursuing additional monies.

I disagree. This is not a zero-sum game... there are far too few dollars and far too many demands, so even good causes risk being underfunded. Working with the county to assist them in maintaining the trail helps them stretch the available dollars to do more... like the map brochures printed this year, the trailhead signs scheduled, or the Wentworth Springs maintenance effort funded last year.

The current system is not perfect -- but working it is bearing fruit. The second Thursday of each month, El Dorado County holds a Rubicon Oversight Committee (ROC), which is the best place to ask questions about funding and plans...

Good questions... this level of attention will help accountability and focus...

That's killer news. Just wondering how many DMV offices/people will know what/how to do it.

I know at our DMV here, they keep trying to tell us that you can't change a street legal rig and make it a green sticker rig. Everyone that does it has to stand there for about 30 mins explaining all the others that have done it, get a manager, usually make a phone call to Sac., and then they had you paperwork and tell you to have it inspected by the CHP to make sure it is safe. "Well, it was safe for the street!" "But we have to make sure it's safe for the dirts roads" "Whatever "

The thing I had a prob with was not going to green sticker. It was that they would not dual reg it street / green sticker. One or the uther and when you go green good god dont whant to go back cuz that will not happen.

One thing to remember about the Rubicon is that it is a County road. For those that bring up the lack of funding or maintenance on the trail, be thankful, it wouldn't be as much fun for most of you if it was maintained to stay the same as it was 40 years ago. Be thankful it is what it is now, and being maintained as such now.

As for the dual reg. I would take the extra time on my way through Placerville to the 'Con to do the paperwork. They are familiar with it there, and know how to do it.

We are speaking of the topics Sierra club is using not making it into a 4 lane highway. But thanks for paying attention

Don't be a smartass in here. this thread was started talking about Law enforcement on the trail, and a couple of responses came across as complaining that reg. and traffic laws are being enforced. It's a county road(in certain sections), and they have jurisdiction as such.

the point I was bringing up is that one of the major reasons that the Rubicon Drama started is because of lack of funding from the forestry service AND from the county. Maintenance and patrols were non-existant. Now we are getting some maintenance funding and patrols. At the ROC meetings I attended, one of the topics brought up was should the trail be "maintained" to an earlier standard. Pictures were brought in from different eras to look at the feasability of "restoring" the trail back to the 40's 50's 60's etc. This idea was brought up by some of the people who would rather not see us there

The Forestry service is being sued by the Sierra Club for not maintaining the ohv trails and roads because the funding has not increased. I don't recall OHV Park fees from green stickers being used for Rubicon trail access and maintenance, I believe the Major funding was from the FS and the County. Randii knows much more about the local issues than I do.

The volunteer hours the rubicon trail patrol does is logged and helps get money from the green sticker fund. If we had more people to do trail patrol and logging hours we could get more money for the trail. Its not a ton of money but it is something.

Trail access and maintenance... that's a fuzzy question, sorry I don't have a precise answer. Significant recent funding came from Recreational Trails Program funding, as administered by OHMVR.

This is quickly drifting from law enforcement... perhaps it makes sense to start another thread for funding discussions? Funding gets DAMN complicated and I definitely don't have all the pieces, bu I am trying to learn...

The ENTIRE length of the Rubicon Trail (and Ellis Creek Trail) is now COunty Road. Both Eldorado and Placer Counties have made it official.

The restrooms are planned near the kiosk and the bridges (two) are planned for the Ellis Creek crossing and the Gerle Creek crossing. Ellis has never had a bridge and Gerle Creek lost it's bridge years (or decades) ago.

Volunteer hours can be used as matching funds for RTP grants. If the County gets a $50k grant, they have to provide documentation of $50k worth of volunteer hours or match the grant from the general fund. Not all grants require matching funds.

Historically, there has been minimal funding from the counties and FS. Rich platt failed as a FS employee to do his job to maintain/manage forest roads. Now, his friends are sueing to close those roads for lack of maintenance/mamagement. I really think they should be sueing Rich personally for failing to do his job.

Doug - back from Maui and ready to get going on the trail (if my rig weren't broken)

One bridge is on the old County Road over Gerle Creek at about: 39.0041 by 120.3841
The other is at Ellis Creek on the Rubicon Trail at about: 39.0229 by 120.3063

The vault toilet will be near the Loon Lake trailhead.

Welcome to the Rubicon here is your Ticket.

Welcome to the Rubicon here is your Ticket.
That is what My Nephew and I experienced this past Saturday Thanksgiving weekend when we went to the Trail.
We were in My Nephews new 2007 JK 4 Door. Granted that it has been lifted and has after market bumpers but that is all. As we crossed the first dam we passed a Female Forest Service Officer who hard eyed us but kept going. As we crossed the second dam we were flagged down by a second FSLE. Sitting at the Top of the entrance to staging area. The second we stopped my nephew was asked where is your front plate. Why don't you have your seat belt on properly 'He had on the lap belt with the shoulder strap behind him.
We were very polite to this FSLE. In return He was Arrogant and Mister by the book. I believe a warning would have sufficed. The Ticket was not a big deal as far as a fine goes, but the fact that my Nephew lives in Nevada and the FSLE stated that my nephew must appear in Court in Placerville for the SEAT BELT TICKET. I know our State is hard up for cash but this is ridiculous. So much for good will between the F/S and trail users.

Asian LEO last name Marcus was prolific prior weekend also. Cracked windshield and no front plate were popular.

The group I was with this past weekend got ticketed by the same guy. He gave a mud flap ticket, windshield ticket, front plate ticket, cracked taillight ticket(cracked, not missing) and threatened to give a bunch more. None of us were even in our trucks at the time. We were camped right before the second dam at Loon and were sitting in camp when the FSLE guy walked up to us.

They had a guy pulled over at the bottom of Ice House...cuffed and sitting on his hands and they were searching his vehicle.

Redheck and part of our group came down the hill and tree cop followed them all the way down, not sure if it was the same guy (Ken) who ticketed last weekend. Then another one followed my hubby and the rest of the group down shortly after.

What the heck is going on all of a sudden? Why all the harassment?

I have a contact at the USFS that I can push this issue a bit with. I can't go to that contact with hearsay, though. I am in the process of gathering information that shows a pattern that WILL do some good to show my contact. If anybody can fax me a copy of a ticket, I will put them together and talk to my guy.

PM me if you can fax me one and I will give you a fax number and follow up on it.

Remember, complaining here is a good outlet, but we can't change this without showing a pattern of selective enforcement.
