Lets assume a 700R4 will bolt up to a LS, pick a year, there all the same bolt pattern.

In case you didn't understand the answer. All 700R4 have the same bolt pattern.

Wrong, there are 2 common 700r4 bolt patterns, 60deg v6 and 4.3/v8.

You need one that came behind a 4.3 or V8, that's any number of chevy trucks, s10s, blazers, suburbans, camaros, and full size cars. The 4x4 v8 ones have stronger cases and internals.

From '85 to '87 there was a large input shaft version, which has the same spline as a 350 trans.

the LS1 or GEN III motors run a 4L60E or a 4L65E behind them. electronic transmission. we put a 700R4 behind a LS1 and it was a pain to get the tv cable hooked up. (kick down/throttle pressure) we couldnt get the right pull out of the cable. we put a fullmanul valvebody in it and have never had a problem .................

IIRC its not the bolt pattern that is the issue it the flex plate and a spacer for the Torque Converter. at least this was what we needed for the 6.0 L to TH350 in the buggy so I guess as long as you have the 90* V8/4.3 V6 pattern your golden. also didn't the 700R4 have a lock up converter so that would need to be addressed as well. I am sure the have non lock up as well.

Hope this helps

thats right we get a spacer from advance adapters #716155a crank bushing. art carr builds an extension on the crank pilot of the converter. you also have to watch the torque converter holes. if you use a 700R4 or 4L60E, thm350 the holes will fit the camaro flexplate, you have to drill for a thm400 converter, not a great idea, tci has a dual drilled flex plate 399753 comes with spacer also ..................

For you guys running the LS V8's and T350-T400. Are you running the VSS and how are they running?

Yes that is correct, however the bolt pattern and version is the least of his worries as most of the posts after yours pointed out. Its pretty obvious that he doesn't have any knowledge about the 700R4, and if he is only worried about bolt pattern he needs to do more research. Hence my first comment, "assuming you can get it bolted up". Bolting it up would be the least of his concerns. Then I poked a little fun at him, which you assumed was gospel. But hey thanks for your insightful knowledge that wont mean dick if he doesn't figure out how to control it.

Now I am poking a little fun at you.

To the original poster, if your after the 700R4 because of the 4th gear (overdrive), then a better option is a 4L60E or 4L80E. The 4L60E is the electronically controlled version of the 700R4 and if you get one after '98 or so it will have the removeable bellhousing. Regardless of donor vehicle, the internalls can be beefed up to handle the power/torque of your engine and tires, up to about 450ft pounds of torque. Plus with the electronics it will be easoer to control and make the torque converter lock up function while on the interstate. Without lock up you will fry the tranny on the interstate.

Would mister smark alec like to explain the difference in bolt pattern between the LS1 and a standard 350 V8 blcok? Would he also like to explain the reason you need a different flex plate or spacer? There is more to it then bolt pattern. Sorry, poking a little more fun. :biggrin

I've done three swaps so far and haven't used a VSS yet. No issues.

I also haven't used a spacer or a different flex plate (just used the one from the 5.3), but hey I'm not smart.

Hint:

www.summitracing.com

LS1 - 700R4 Crank Adapter $34.95 Part#: HP3795
LS1 - 700R4 Flexplate $129.95 Part#: HP4004

Manual valve body in the tranny and Summit also sells kits to lock up the torque converter. I am not aware of a kit to make the TV cable work. Not saying it doesn't exist, just that I am not aware of it. Hence the manual valve body.

The 700R4 will bolt up to the LS1, except for one bolt, leave it out.

prostock, I have one of the later versions of the 700r4 which has the most upgraded internals, it was in a suburban. alumcj is putting one behind an LS1 also, when he gets it running you should see what bugs he ran into.

Its going to work flawless i hope. Its bone stock, and im going to run it that way at first. See how i like the shifting and such before i dump money at it.

Its only an afternoon to swap a trans out - no big deal.

yeah the shafts are interchangable. If you run the 4l60e... What type of transfer case are you going to run? You're going to need a VSS for that trans to shift. (or run a Compushift)

Don't I feel like a jackass? I didn't realize you were a LS to 700r4 expert.

If you run a 6 bolt 4l60e. We would normally build the Atlas for the factory 27 spline 4wd output shaft and then run the 50-0405 VSS adapter (vehicle speed sensor) with an AS-9111. If length is a huge issue for you, you could also go with one of our shorter 300m output shafts and run the VSS off the Atlas input (as shown). The adapter is 1.625", We also offer an even shorter application that eliminates the front clocking ring off the Atlas, but it is so short that there is no reluctor and a compushift would have to used
