3RZ swap wiring

I am swapping in a '98 twin coil 3RZ from a manual transmission/4wd Tacoma into my '85 standard cab pickup and was hoping someone could help me out with the wiring. I DID search and I DID read 4rnrRick's excellent write up as well as BigMike's excellent writeup on Marlin's BB. What I did not find is wiring info. for the earlier Tacoma's. My truck has an IK1 and IK2 plug but no IK3 plug. I have the IK2 plug figured out but I am having a difficult time with IK1. What I have so far is as follows:

IK2 - Junction plug from Motor to Dash Harness

Pin#, Color, Description

1. Y/G, oil sending unit (gauge)
2. Y/R, water temp. sending unit (gauge)
3. None
4. None
5. Y/B, data link1 pin TC (cruise, remove)
6. P/B, data link1 pin AB (airbag, remove)
7. None
8. None
9. B/R, IG2 (on ignition switch)
10. B/Silver, tach (gauge)
11. Br/Silver, data link1 pin E1 (ground)
12. G/Y, COR #4
13. None
14. R/B, reverse light +
15. B/O, reverse light -
16. None
17. W/R, COR #2
18. None
19. None
20. None
21. None

IIRC the IK1 plug is not needed for the engine to run. I did not connect it at first on mine but went back and added a circuit on one of the pins for the evap VSVs.

Yeah, I was afraid I might have to do that. I am a bit irritated though because I bought a subscription to TIS (Toyota's "official" tech info. site with FSMs) and I actually downloaded '95-'99 EWD's to compare and NONE of them even mention the IK1 plug. They all include an IK2 and IK3 plug, but every single year has the pins in the wrong spots (I did a little too much work with a multi meter to be wrong on this). Not to mention that early Tacomas don't even have an IK3 plug. If I buy the actual paper EWD what guarantee do I have that it will be any different than Toyota's tech site?

I think I'll just track it down the old fashioned way. It'll give me something to do tonight...

IK1 has a couple different wire colors in it that you will need. That is the plug that goes to the dash harness which means it has your oil pressure alert wire in it, temp sensor im pretty sure. I just finished up my swap a couple months ago and the wire color's are starting to get kind of fuzzy. I am actually going to be tearing my wiring back down this weekend to hook up a few new things. So if I can take a look at everything again I can pretty much tell you what your going to need to hook up.

But as some other people have stated, everything you need to make the truck run is going to be on the IK2 plug. Hit me up if you need some help on what wires to hook up on that one.

May be a noob question but isn't there a place out there that makes plug and play setups for similar things just like this? (thought I've heard of one, just can't recall name) Something like you tell them what you have and whats going in, send them the wiring harness and they do the rest?

There is a company that makes them. I think it is front range off road. However the harness they make is over 300 dollars for some wires and a couple connectors. Granted there is alot of R&D into the setup and maybe a little time to put the set up together.

It is all up to the individual how they want to do it. I myself wanted the challenge and did it myself for alot less than 300 dollars for some wiring harness. I spent about 20 bucks on splice and butt connectors and electrical tape.

IK2 has the oil sending unit wire AND the temp. gauge wire so I got those covered. The reiterate, I have IK2 figured out, labeled and ready to go. I am imagining that most of the IK1 wires are cruise, ABS, and other crap I don't need to bother with. I'm going to track it all down though and I WILL post up what I come up with. Thanks.

Beware though because there are one or two in the IK1 that you will need. I think one of em is the brown for sure.

Yeah, I would appreciate it if you have any notes or you could let me know which wires you kept active from that plug and where they go. Thanks.

I have everything figured out except for one brown wire on the IK1 plug. I am imagining that it isn't necessary and that I will notice no problems if I leave it out. If anyone has any input on what it might be I would love to hear it, though. I just can't imagine where it goes. I tried just about every wire in the entire harness with my continuity tester and can't find it.

Brown is likely going to be ground that terminates at the intake plenum.

so what did you actually have to use out of the IK1 and IK2 harnesses?

I have been doing a running edit of my first post in this thread. All the pin #'s, colors, and what they go to have been labeled. Everything I DON'T need says "remove" in parentheses.

cool, so with a custom dash and mechanical gauges, most of what you have left can be deleted as well?
