Question Took My Steering Box Too Far Apart

I'm tapping my steering gear box this week. When I took the box apart I went too far and all the ball bearing fell out. I thought I picked them all up but I'm missing one. (I did all the research here and figured how to get it back together.) I put it all back together without the missing ball and everything apears to be fine.

1. What I need to know is whether or not the missing ball will have devastating effects in my steering box?

2. Anyone have an extra bearing they can send me?Please!

Well, you know the standard answer....search, dammit!

Actually, when I was researching tapping steering boxes, I found several threads of people who did the same thing. I think there were a few people who ended up buying replacement boxes and now have spare balls.

From what I recall, there are 44 balls, and youmust have all the balls in the box.

SeaBass44 and/or Dr. Smash had spare balls...try the search and PM one of them.

Worst case, I know of an 89 4Runner in the junkyard with a busted sector shaft...I could probably get you the entire box for $50. Let me know.

FAIL

But thanks for trying.

You should have read my initial post more carefully before you posted. Maybe you didn't recognize one of the words I used because it was too big for you to comperhend.

It was "researched".

re·search (rĭ-sûrch', rē'sûrch')
Scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry. See Synonyms at inquiry.
Close, careful study.
v. re·searched, re·search·ing, re·search·es
v. intr.
To engage in or perform research.
v. tr.
To study (something) thoroughly so as to present in a detailed, accurate manner: researching the effects of acid rain.
To do research for: research a magazine article.

That's how I learned how to put it back together and that's where I learned that I was supposed to have 45 balls. Not 44 like you posted here and later had to correct yourself.

I had it happen to one I was tapping, in the end it was easier for me to just get another box

I didn't fail. It's a minor set back.

I'm sure I'll find someone that has an extra bearing they can live without. I just need to find that person. If not, I'll go to an Ecology Auto Wrecking yard. I'm sure there's other Toyota boxes that use that same bearing.

Note that it wasn't a complete fail--I posted where I'd seen someone else who had the same thing happen and had to buy an extra box, and also offered to find you a cheap box for replacement balls. I know you're not a NOOB, and you post some good tech yourself--I wasn't trying to be an asshole--just giving you some friendly ribbing and attempt to be helpful, too.

Did you already check any of those other threads to see if there was anyone else who might have already bought a replacement box who might have a spare ball they could mail you?

My offer still stands to grab that broken junkyard box for spare balls.

I like the bearing shop idea for a replacement ball.

Great thought. I'm pretty sure FJ60 and FJ80 boxes are very similar internally....what would be even more convenient was if 2wd or push-pull boxes were similar--they're both thrown out/recycled by a lot of people!

My thought exactly. When i tapped my box i managed to keep my balls in thier happy place, but read that if you lost your balls, you would need a micromiter because they were different sizes.

Get a new box, and take better care of your balls
