Nukem ii

Some of you may remember my old NUKEM truck, probably not . . .

Well I got a hankerin for EFI, and wanted to build a better rig. I wasn't satisfied with suspension, the cage, the welds, etc etc. It was a pretty good first build, but I wanted to do some different stuff so I parted it out.
Then I purchased this machine off a Jason in Lakeside I believe. An '86 with an automatic trans (which i promptly gutted out). But what really sold me was the virgin mary air fresheners, and the mostest awesomest rear race cage. I say that because the word "EXTREME" was inscribed in weld on the back of the cage, so you know its good
BTW, Jason is a pretty cool guy, he got it like that and was gonna build it but had to sell it to me to pay for the well he had to drill on his property

My plans for this rig:
-triangulated 4link in the rear airshocked, 51" rears in the front.
-Full cage, rear similar to the allpro cage, inner cage in the cab, really nice and close to the body so when I roll it won't dent in too badly.
Up front I'm going to completely tube it out AND keep it street legal It's gonna be pretty outrageous.
-custom dash, complete with RFID keyless start.
-Keep the 22RE for now, which has great compression. Throw a torquer cam in it.
-Aussie's and 4.88's
-Double cases and W56 (waiting to go in)
-Hydro-steer
-SAS
-Other stuff, can't think right now

Now this is where I get really crazy and people tell me to put the peace pipe down: In the distant future I would LOVE to drop an electric motor under the hood, complete with a backup diesel generator so I can drive continously, somewhat like the concept chevy volt car. Now I know what you're thinking, a diesel generator is not going to have nearly enough juice to power a motor to push that much weight continously. Well no, but I've got a trick up my sleeve that I want to try to give a HUGE boost to the power that generator can generate. Plus by the time I get around to this rediculousness Li-ion battery packs I'm sure will have come down more in price. But enough of my blabbering, on with the build:

Had nothing to do one day so I built some 58" sliders out of 2" .120 square tube:

Then me n my buddy took the cab off the truck, this is in a 2-car garage mind you. This is curtis, he's cool.:

Humor, and that's me.:

Yanked out the auto tranny:

Wire wheeled the entire frame from the engine back, welded up all of the holes:

And then primered and painted it:

Next obviously is put in the tranny and double cases which are all ready to go with the acception of a collar for my release bearing. so basically the entire build is waiting on that one part

Anyway more updates soon to come ...

I thought I had heard you were going to build up a sami?? Do you still have the motor from your old truck still lying around by chance?

Nice start on the new build.

You're welcome! Glad you're gettin good use out of it, I wish I'd had that motor in my old truck longer it was a good one.

Well I got the tranny and cases in. wow it's so nice installing a transmission without the body on. Can't use my FROR crossmember yet because the torsion bar mounts are right in the way., so it's just sitting on the old tranny crossmember for now. Also threw the body back on.

Next I built a mount for my fuel cell out of 2" angle iron. It's a 20 gallon plastic fuel cell. I made sure to build the mount in such a way that on level ground it tips about 1.5 degrees towards the pickup.

Just some legs off the slider, welded to the frame. You'll notice that there's only two legs right now. That's because I'm going to cut a hole in the floor above each slider and attatch a support bar from the slider leg to the back of the cab at an angle. Right next to the seat.

Looks kinda ghey right now but I plan on coming off of it with some round DOM and kickin it up at an angle. I really like the look of the all round sliders, but they just get so beat so I opted for square this time

Started the SAS!!
Here is my front springhanger. Cut out the crossmember and replaced it with some 2.5" 1/4 square tube, torched out some tabs and drilled holes in them for the bolts. Then ground the welds down all purdy

Here today

Gone tomorrow

Had some help

As you can see I had to cut out my body mount to get the shackle hangers in place. I'm running 50" 3rd gen rear springs, and they are looooong. That's the reason I pushed my springhanger mounts out.
Word to the wise: Don't be cheap like me and skimp on the frame jigs for installing the frame tubes. I got 'em in there nice and straight but it would've been a whole lot easier with them.

Got my axle on and even flexed it a little
Gonna have to move the steering box waaay forward. Should be gettin the mounting brackets from marlin tomorrow along with a new pitman arm

Well I wear shoes, that's a must. But what's wrong with no shirt? 'fraid of a little grinder sparks? yeah actually i get lots of little cuts and abrasions and burns and stuff, but it's way better than being shweaty and itchy in a shirt. to each his own
Oh, and thanks

Don't worry I tried my hardest to push it off the stands rockin it and it wouldn't budge. Oh, and this build is all I do pretty much so it's going quickly
EDIT: haha i just realized the picture you're probably looking at with the stand tipping to the side? pretty precarious, yes, but i was just tryin to flex it

Done and done. Just gotta couple odds and ends to take care of then clean up the frame which I'll do when I take out the front clip out.
Here's some pics

Stop. New hammer time?

Had to push the box waaaay forward, couldn't even use marlin's mount without cutting off the front part of it to fit. For some reason it looks like the shaft is going to hit the spring here, but there's clearance a-plenty.

and finally engine hoist flex. It's got more flex but I'm going to have to mess with the springs, or at least drive it around a bit and let 'em soften up, they haven't been on a truck in a long time I believe

If you dont plate more of the steering gear mount and frame you will tear it off over time.

The frame will crack and if you dont catch t in time you will have floppy front frame syndrome.

Time for some long overdue updates.
Since last post I've:
-Installed my FROR T-case crossmember
-Installed shifters on cases
-Filled all fluids
-Installed fuel pump
-Replaced timing chain
-Installed long-travel brake lines
-Built rear bumper
-Started sheetmetal for bed
-lots of other miscellaneous crap

But before anything, check out this oddity, I have NO idea how or why this door is like this. Both handles work. WHAT!?

Had to do a lot of cutting and fitting, but my T-cases are about as high as I can possibly get them up into my body.

Question: Are valves usually made out of solid gold? I think mine are

I pulled the oil pan to look for the rest of it, but couldn't find anything. I guess it wore through and ground it down to nothing?

Finally! got my truck porn!

Removed my LSPV, and used this handy plug I got from autozone to plug up the return line. I haven't even bled the system yet and already it works way better than it did with the LSPV

This should be good to hang my mudflaps off of

My last build I did a bed similar to what I'm doing now, just never finished it. I didn't like how I had to shim everything because the frame obviously is not the same height everywhere. So I just shaved my frame this time. Decreases strength a bit, but then again I am adding a lot of tube to it.
