spring perch crushing rear axle
Has anyone had the rear spring perches crush the axle tubes?
I noticed my pinion angle decreasing over time, past being inline with hte driveshaft, to where the agle was a few degrees negative. I run 3" TG springs and they are bent (I guess a traction bar is in order) somewhat, and I assumed this was the sole cause of the axle rotation. But when I set out to grind out the welds on my perches i noticed thatthe tube had been crushed by the perches. ![]() thats a 1/4" gap under the straight edge. ![]() the points of the perches left even deeper indents ![]() ![]() Aside from the crushing the axle "seems" straight. I plan to cut a chunk out of another axle tube, split it lenghtwise and use each half to reinforce under a perch. Has anyone seen similar damage? Fixable or replace the housing?

How long have you had the rig.... it could be from major overloading abuse.

That would be some major over torque. Must be done by monkeys with big air tools.

Rig is exactly a year old now. I beat on it fairly hard. 38's, doubler, with 4.7 in the rear case and 5.29's.
As far as over torquing...I tightened them with a 1/2" ratchet.... just checking out your build Stubs...may have to plagarize that track bar.

![]() What does a half inch rachet have to do with anything? I have seen this alot on rigs with blocks too.. A cool quick tip is to take some 3/8"(About the same witdth as your perch) flat bar and bend it to the shape of the underside of the axle under the perches going up the the bottom of the perch top and weld them in place.. kinda like the shape of a V or U.. just helps a stock sheetmetal housing survive big tires, lots of torque, and over torquing the ubolts Last edited by Pat; 07-28-2009 at 07:46 PM. |

I've seen it before. U-bolts dent the housing a little sometimes but wrap is what caves it in on the front side.
Here's what I've done to spread the load around the tube better. ![]()
