A runner with a MB diesel would be a low-rent (compared to a TDI or 2.8 TGV) and low-tech alternative..........

How many mpg? I forgot how much the runner weighed. My pickup is only 5k and with a 4.6 I still get mo bettah (or close tot it) gas mileage than a gas 4runner.

It's not just you... We just sold our last Toyota (my 85 4runner ) in July... in August we gathered EVERY Toyota related part (filled a 12x24 area in the storage ) and sold all that! :whew:

... and yesterday a 'friend' called and told us about a primo 92 4runner with a gimp engine... Tim drove over - looked it over - got told it's 1500 - or best offer... AGH!!! ... and took pics so he could 'show me'

I immediately logged on and looked in the engines and trannys for sale section on here!

Keep a sane tire size on it and I would bet you could hit 25.

Seriously it would be a DD beater, not a crawler, so 31's maybe 33's if I got crazy. Too bad there isn't a company that offeres adapters for 240/300ds to yota 5 speeds.

A non computer controlled MBZ with a manual 5 speed might be the ticket. Of course it will still sound like a wound up tractor.

I read a couple of those already. I'd still be left to my own devices for the motor mounts from what I've seen. Oh yeah, someone mentioned the engines being hard to balance with flywheels since they came with autos and the TC used to take care of whatever imbalance was there. I dunno, just read it on the net.

The balance guff was just that. Guff.

Not hard to do at all. For your best bet, though, run the MB automatic that comes with the engine, and the OTT divorced-yota case setup. Presto!

That's probably the best bet, but I WANT a 5 speed. It's why I bought the other beater, but my wife's all but laid claim to it. I occasionally get to drive it.

And thus I posit:

Whilst whistling along at the speed limit.
Fine German Oel-Motor lightly going clacketa-clacketa-clacketa.
Modest 31 inch all-terrain radials generating a mild hum.
Local classical station playing at a reasonable volume.

All that 5-speed/automatic controversy will just melt away.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but it certainly made me drool... It looks like it would require some fab skills.

Because you want a brazillion dollars and it's not local. Do you have a gently used 300d for cheap?

Actually while not sleeping last night I posited this very post and you know what, I agree. I want to go with the simplest plan. If I can run a yota auto trans behind the MBZ diesel and keep the transfer case and everything else stock I'd be happy. The closer to bolt in the better. I wonder what the mileage difference is between auto and manual in such an application?

That's sick, but WAY out of what I'm looking to do. I want cheap & reliable, preferably simple operation. Nothing trick, nothing fancy. Just a diesel powered, but otherwise mostly stock runner.

I'm confused at how married people with two jobs and no kids can be poor. Confused enough to use the emoticon.

Do the mercedes autos have a lockup torque converter? If you're still thinking 4bt, look at www.4btswaps.com

I don't know, but I'm off to read. I just found out that the runner I was looking at has title issues and can't be sold right now. Oh well, I didn't need a project right now anyway.

Nuther question

All of the MBZ's I find in this half of the state are a grand plus. How much could one expect for parting one out sans engine and trans? Is it worth much as scrap?
