Cheap twin stick (with two actual sticks) cost me a buck

Here is a cheap way to build a cool twin stick for almost nothing. If you can't weld, go look at another post. This works for both forward and top shifters. I just wanted to throw the idea out. It works good for me. If you don't understand this from the pictures, you should probably just buy one. This setup requires the same interlock pin removal as everything else. Basically you cut the top and bottom off of a stock shifter, split the rotator in half, install a washer and weld new tops and bottoms on it.

-Barret

Step 1 Tear it apart

Start with a factory shifter. Remove it from the housing. Cut off the stick part of the shifter. Cut off the lower part of the shifter that engages the forks. You will now have most of a sphere, a dust washer and three pieces to throw away (stick, lower finger, spring).

Step two Building the new sphere's

Split the sphere in half with a sawzall or hack saw. it must bisected between, and parallel to the locating grooves. Grind and smooth both sides. Cut the dust washer in half. This is the top of the sphere and without it your shifter will not be held down tight enough. Weld these on top of your hemi-spheres by placing a bead in the inside of the dust washer. Find a washer about the same size as the spere. . Grind smooth. Build two new fingers shaped like the original, but flat out of 1/4". Weld your new lower fingers one on each of the sphere halves. Weld it to the inside of one of the sphere's. Grind smooth.

Step Three Add sticks

You can make whatever you want to weld on top of the spheres for sticks. Keep in mind that you need to leave enough room for it to move back and forth, and you have to put the dust washer on first if its hole is smaller then your stick. I built adjustment into mine so i could angle the sticks to eliminate interference.

p.s. You can contact T1TNDRA for info

I see the T-case shifters in FRONT of the trans shifter, work on a W56? Oops, didn't see the pedals.
Also, why the dust washer split? The hole too small in it for two shifters to be in different locations?
Great post, something that's needed for wheeling in low 2WD on hard and hilly turf.

Cool idea, but I don't see how you're going to keep it sealed from dirt and water.
I've had a milkshake in my t-case just from an old, cracked shifter boot before.

If you can stick your stick and ball in it, it should work.

You have to split the dust washer, or when you shift one side.............you shift both. It must also be welded to the hemisphere, or it could turn and jam. The washer is to fill the space left by the hack saw, and to slightly increase the size of the sphere to make up for spring removal. You can grind the washer to "tune" your fit.

cut the fingers out of a rubber glove, and band it around the mount. Toyotas arent known for the super sealed case anyhow.

haha exactly. Words to live by right there!

But really, that's a cool little hack job.

Obviously it's not gonna seal the best, sure, but if your buildin a rig to drive daily and/or in water and rain- I'm sure you'd just buy Davez anyway.

This is just a home brew hack alternative, and it's pretty cool that it works.

Before putting it in there, maybe he can provide some feedback on it after he wheels it for a while to see how it works and holds up. My .02

For ~$8, you could get a set of heavy chemical-resistant gloves, and use a radiator hose clamp to clamp it around the shifter base.

Any chance you'd share pics of the cable twinstick?

This stick sadly will see very little trail time, sorry. This truck is more of a capable cream puff. I swore I was done with this wheelin stuff when I sold the last rig. Over the last ten years I have built dozens of twin and triple sticks for people using different designs. I've had very few problems, but admitedly some leaks. This one seals the best; by far (although I haven't had it upside down yet, and currently no plans). I am using some retired fingers from the parts washer gloves safety wired onto the tansfer. I also sewed a clean set of two fingers into the truck shifter boot. Looks clean, makes no noise. I actually spent less time making these boots than installing the twin boots I used to buy (about 20 min), but then again I sew like a woman.
