MFS preps The Pirate4x4 buggy for KOH
The King of all giveaways is underway http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=827246 and MFS has been busy turning up the heat on my rig in anticipation of the race.
Last year I debuted the rig at KOH with a 4.3 v6 that quite honestly sucked ass. So the first order of business is a mildly hot rodded 500Hp LS2 out a GTO. So while Eric, Jeff and Dan over at MFS are busy with a whole host of mods and race prep I figure we should start with the motor.

old motor was actually a built crate motor that had a cam and intake work done. But even at 165hp or so it was just never going to be that much fun to peel out in....even though I did have a 100hp NOS shot
![]() So out with the old iron. ( which by the way is for sale cheap. ) ![]() ![]()

I will get some addition detail pics of the motor build in the next few days,
In the mean time a huge change in the car layout is moving the radiator to the rear. So a call was made to Steve at Griffin. Now I have to tell you, I thought Griffin was cool for stepping up and being the sponsor of the King of the hammers last year and now again for 2009. But until you get the chance to talk with Tom or steve you don't reaize just how cool (pun intended) they are. They build radiators for everything from nuclear subs to NASCAR and it was a real eye opener just how much technology they have at their disposal. bottom line, if you need your rig to run cool and want the best ... give griffin a call. check out their website to get an idea of just how many different applications they have. it is impressive !! ![]() http://www.griffinrad.com/index.cfm |

The start of last years KOH race had to be a tough thing for you to watch; kinda like the tortoise and the hare, except the hare was fast enough to break, get towed back to pit, fixed and still finish the course

So with Dan Trout now fabricating over at MFS I knew that the aluminum shroud work would turn out pimp.

Ya know, maybe it should have been tough to watch but in fact I was really very proud day for me. getting my rig to that point was a 3 year project from hell. thought the whole divorce, loosing my shop and equipment and being homeless for a while and then moving across the state to where I live now it was just a very challenging time in my life. So with the help of Mike Shaffer, Bob Roggy and several other good friends my rig was finally functional and entered in the biggest rock race of all time. it didn't even run until 3am the nigh before the race and even then it was dubbed the "sputter craft" since it was barely running ![]() took me the better part of 3 years to go from new X chassis to KOH race :smoking: ![]()

Very nice aluminium work! Are the side panels removable for trail riding? Is your spare going to be moved?

Are you running a fuel cooler or at all concerned with the Al intake acting as a heat sink? I thought that's why OEM was composite? My return rails soak a ton of heat from the engine bay.

Damn that is some nice work.
Are you going to run a light box for your tail lights or stick them somewhere else?

but you are correct, the aluminum does pass heat unlike the composite factory unit and we have accounted for it. stay tuned |

my old bead down seats had seen better days and were retired in favor of a very custom set of PRP Competition Pro seats done in Black Ostritch skin leather and ODG ballistic cordura with ass and lumbar heaters

if you are gonna have 500hp in a rock crawler then the least you can do is install a stainless Alpha gas pedal like the trophy trucks use
![]() also mounted the 12v guy winch switch in a nice handy location. All wiring is soldered and shrink sleeved with connections via weatherpack fittings. I decided to run relays and no fuses.
