Crawl ratio for rock racing?
Did some searching but guess I am not typing it in right.Wondering what the average crawl ratio people are using in Rock Race events?I am thinking around 35 to 1 give or take a few would be good but figured I would ask.

Is it still called a "crawl" ratio if you're racing???
I know I blow your mind ... ![]() J. J. Last edited by patooyee; 10-19-2009 at 06:54 PM. |

My build now is 50:1 not including converter. My old rig was 34:1 with 42's. To be honest back then it was too high for what i did but probably good for rock racing with the power that I had. (Mild SBC350.) I'm not a racer though so I'm probably not a good source of knowledge there. Sorry to waste your time.
Draggbody is who I compare my specs with since we wheel together. He has a mild BBC454 with an SM465 and when he's trying to go fast never even puts the t-case in low range. That puts him around 16:1 in first gear I believe. (he doesn't use granny in that case and spends most of his time in 2nd gear anyway.) He recently won SETTC and dominated the speed courses so that may be informative for you. I wouldn't say that he was exactly in a field of fellow racers though. He runs 40's. J. J. tires play into it. You need more gearing to feel the same with 42's then with 37's. That said mid to upper 30's with 40" tires. This is speaking to xrra type stuff/rock bouncing. I think Randy at jimmy's says around 42:1. I'm goint to be about 38:1 in mid like doug

I'm currently 31:1, and it feels great for racing. I do notice when slow crawling that it's pretty high. I used to be 43:1 and I think the rig is faster now with the higher gearing. Before, the 1st gear rapped so quick, i lost time between the 1-2 shift. Now, 1st can hold longer and pulls harder. Tranny is a 4l60E (3.06 1st i believe) and the t-case is a np205 with 5.13 r&p.
If i were building a multi-purpose rig, i think a 3 or 4spd case would be the ticket, that way you have more control in the slow rocks but have the mid range for the speedy stuff. I guess it depends on what you will be doing with your rig. If only racing, mid 30's would be great. But if you wanna crawl some, like rec wheeling, deeper would def be better. I got plenty of motor to overcome, but it's real jumpy in the rocks.
