Homebuilt sxs and registration

I have been thinking about building my own sxs type vehicle.
After moving to Wi I have lost all of my interest in off roading, most of the land is private, or way the hell away.
This has drawn me to ATV's, there are lots of trails around me, however I need a cage around me, I also want something that my wife can ride along in.
I cant find any info on home built sxs, or atv registration in Wi, or anywhere else really.
Wi has not yet approved sxs's for operation on trails, they currently have a pilot program which gives individual counties to approve UTV's for operation on their trails.

Any thoughts, or experience?

Its probably going to have to be no more than 50 inches wide like here in Ohio, but thats not written in stone. PA has 2 classes of ATVs for their trails and the second one allows for wider UTVs like Teryxs,Rhinos etc. Currently the base RZR at 50 inches, is the only UTV allowed on Ohio trails. Ive been thinking about a project like yours to. Im still researching how to get a title and/or registration for a homemade quad. If I find any info, Ill pass it on. Im hoping Ohio changes up its rules to allow for more width.

Look for a used Rhino chassis w/title and just use a little bit of it and register it as a Rhino. They have been around since 04 so you should be able to pick up one fairly cheap

I am gonna do some digging later, but there was a guy in 2007 or 2008 that took and chopped up a Kawasaki Brute Force and made it into a side x side.

I like that also. Been kicking around building my own as well, just because, I need more crap to do.

There is a site buggynews.com

You can find a lot of info on what you are looking for there.

depending on how wide you can go you have 2 good routes

This is a larger buggy - you can buy these cheap, they come with titles, this one has been converted to a Geo Metro 3 cyl motor.

The larger buggies already have better suspensions and not much more work besides new shocks are needed.

This is the type I have but still have the stock motor which is a 650 cc 2 cyl.

If you gotta keep it less wide this this is the other option

buy a junk Polaris 500 (popular cause they use a CV belt auto transmission and cheap)

And you put the suspension and motor onto the smaller frame buggies, like the ones Tractor Supply sells (find them super cheap not running on CL all the time)

You can see how much narrower this setup is.

here is how the smaller buggy looks stock - you can get these with a title and not running for $300 all the time

As you can see the suspension looks much better once you put all the gear on it from the Polaris

Michigan doesn't have any atv registration. They have titles but that is only used for proof of ownership. All that is needed to take an atv on any trails is an ORV sticker which you buy yearly.

Look at a badland buggy, go to Badlandbuggy.com, and look at their st4, it's a build your own buggy. The plans are pretty cheap and the buggys when done look pretty cool.

If your a tight ass you can build one of these ona budget and have less than 3 g's into one that will do everythign a 12K SXS will do and more.

I am building one right now slowly collecting parts, between my engine drivetrain and other accesories I only have about 600.00 into. Now I haven't bought any steel yet, this is just drivetrain, GSXR 600 engine, polaris transmission with hi/lo/reverse, front differnetial, all 4 spindles, and 4 hubs.

Don't buy a cheap chinese knock off and try to retro a motorcycle motor into them, it's a pain in the ass, and the frames are junk, build your own, the materials are about 300.00 total just to complete a frame.

I've always like taking a Sami, slicing, dicing into a minimum width streetable caged rail type vehicle. Take some tall skinny 32x9.5 and it would be minimally the widest it could be with the wheels and tires which is probably under 58". Same thought with a postal DJ5 Jeep.
Got the great idea years ago from someone on Pirate under Suzuki. Been watching his vids and pics as he mod'd and wheeled his Sami.
Beginning - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...rty.jpg....now its linked, 38's, and longer. Pretty sure axles are Toyota.

But before you go out and spend any money, check your local rules and regs for vehicle applications.
