toughest tire for sxs

Ive had atv's for years but never used many aftermarket tires. Looking to buy a rhino in the next few months and was wondering what are some good tires for it once the stock ones get worn. I live in east TN and will be riding mainly trails with rocks and roots. I only go through what mud i have to so don't care for any serious mud tires, just mainly looking for good traction and more so puncture resistance in sidewalls. I've heard that bighorns are pretty good but was wondering what else is available. Will probably go with stock size or maybe one inch taller, just don't want something that will kill the power.

I run the Bighorns and like them a lot. Don't have enough experience across brands to say they're the absolute best .... Don't forget to change your air pressure to match the terrain and your driving style. UTV's are big enough that it makes a difference. I run beadlocks and relatively low pressure when rock crawling.

KOH Wheels

From what I saw at KOH...It was wheels not tires. Cast wheels were definitely not the hot set-up.

I've heard the Bighorns are the way to go too. But Iam not impressed with mine.
The side walls seem to cut easy.

I've tried a few different tires. Right now I'm running 25" Goodyear MTR's, and so far I'm very happy! No punctures YET. the ITP XTR mud lites are HEAVY and pick up nails and small branches like there magnets, also are not that good in sand(river beds). A buddy of mine is running the Bighorns, we tore a side wall on a rock in the desert. Rode 12 miles back to the truck at +/- 20 mph with bead locks, stiched up the tire with safety wire, put on a patch and finished the day. My votes for the MTR's or Bighorns.

Edit: Bighorns measure about an inch over what they claim. 25"=26" 26"=27"

I had the same issue when mine were new. But after a good ride and you loosen up the rubber they work great. I have also put hole in the ITP 589's when they were new. But the Bighorns are the best tire I have ever used for rock crawling and snow. I've run then as low as 1.5 lbs and never had a problem.

I have had the bighorns on mine for about two years, they have more plugs in them than they have lugs. I think that a fox tail can puncture them. They are not tough, but work well.

The ITP terracross's do well. The 589's that I have, have close to 1,000 miles on them and no plugs or leaks

In the desert, where high speed and rock strikes can be serious problems, some side x side racers are running General Grabber AT2 car tires. 26x14.

The new ITP BajaCross looks like a great tire. 8 ply and they say it's there longest wearing tire yet. I put a set on a full size Ranger and have been pretty impressed, I'll probably put them on the RZR when the Bighorns need replacing

Nothing against the Maxxis tires, it's just after one trip out in the desert, the stock wheels on my Rhino were junk. If you really drive a side by side hard, you will blow through the Bighorn's sidewalls fast and the wheel becomes the weak link. Car tires like the Grabber AT2s, or now discontinued BFG A/T are designed to hold up a much heavier vehicle, I think around 1,200-lbs per tire, so Rhinos simply can’t kill them.
The downfall is weight.

From Our experience sidewall damage on UTV's generally comes from cutting or impaling by sticks or sharp rocks. The light truck tires by BFG, general or? still have verry thin sidewalls, and cut just as easily. Wheel damage usually comes from running too low a pressure at too high a speed. If you are going to be running high speeds in the desert I reccomend running anywhere from 15-20 psi, this will make your tires and wheels hold up much better, however it may tend to be harder on things like control arms and shock mounts. The best advice is to drive better. and try not to hit big rocks at high speeds. Esier said than done of course. as far as traction goes, any of the UTV tires like bighorns or baja Crosses or whatever will provide much better traction in rocks or loose dirt & gravel than the Light Truck tires. however if you are looking for wear the LT tires last way longer, if you don't tear them before they are worn out. More advice would be to cary a plug kit and portable compressor or another option would be Tireballs but they are quite pricey.

I have Highlifter MTS's and absolutely love them. I plow snow in the winter. The rest of the year I run rocks, roots, sand and mud. They are a pretty hard compound so they wear well. Heck, I made a 1 mile run up the shore of Lake Superior. We were running in about 20" of water on shale and jagged rock. I hardly slipped a tire and didn't blemish them.

Just an option if you guys didnt know about them is there is now a 15" atv rim made. I know they have the 4/110mm pattern which fits the rhinos. The rangers need the 4/156mm pattern which I dont think they make in the 15" rim. As far as I know the only 15" rim made though is the Buckshot. I dont particularly like the looks of it but I ran it on my last bog bike with 30x9.5 swampers and they held up great and hold the bead surprisingly well with low pressure even on rocks
