Dixie Run 2008

Southern Four Wheel Drive Association - DIXIE RUN 2008

In the southeast when you think of premier four wheel drive events the Dixie Run automatically comes to mind as the number one event east of the Mississippi. This year amid the controversy concerning the Upper Tellico OHV Area, there has been speculation that the event will not be held. Well folks, it is Dixie Run time again!

Greg Griffith who has been coordinating this event for over twenty years likes to call it “a little event known as the Dixie Run”. This event started with humble beginnings over twenty two years ago in McNabb Creek Campground. As the event has grown over the years it is now in its present location located just outside of Murphy, NC and has quickly become what I believe to be the “Dixie Run Experience”. I cannot take credit for that statement however. Bob Yarbrough, former President of Southern, and now Past President, coined that phrase a few years ago and it is certainly a true statement.

There is a great atmosphere when amongst the four wheel drive faithful who make the trek every year from all over the southeast and even the entire country to be a part of this event. It is seeing people you may not see but once year at the Dixie Run and playing catch up and the enthusiasm of first timers who vow to be back next year. It is the sounds of vehicles being repaired at all hours of the night, the smell of campfires mixed with the smells of various meals being cooked. It is the sounds of laughter and conversations mixing as trail stories are being told. It is vendors, raffles, silent auctions, and the sense of purpose knowing the real reason of the event and that is to support the trail maintenance that Southern Four Wheel Drive Association has done over the years and still does today. It is the dedication of the many volunteers that it takes to pull an event of this magnitude off. It is all of these things and more all set in a beautiful area that regardless of where you travel, it is hard to beat. Oh yes, I forgot to mention the four wheeling!

As mentioned, the purpose of the Dixie Run event is a fund raiser to support the trail maintenance we do. This year it goes even deeper. With the issues facing the Tellico area, this event is critically important this year not only from the Southern and Rescue Tellico financial standpoint but to remind the businesses in the Murphy and surrounding area just how much an event like the Dixie Run brings in revenue to their area and the following the sport of four wheeling has.

So we look forward to seeing your there! If you are a repeat attendee welcome back! If you have always wanted to go but never have, now is the time to come on down! Check out the web site, www.sfwda.org, for details. Come support Southern Four Wheel Drive Association, Rescue Tellico, and all of the other Off Highway areas we help support and enjoy the fun fellowship of the event.

See you there.

Gary Parsons
President Southern Four Wheel Drive Association

ill be there

it would be nice to double the number of people this year compared to last year to make a statement. so even if you can't make due to whatever the reason try to pay the entry fee. i know or some of you it is a long way to travel but if you cant make it this year but plan on trying to make it to the east coast sometime in your life to wheel tellico is a beautiful and fun place. pay the fees lets keep it open. the only way to fight it is to show what a loss it would be to close it. help us all you can. what is a fee dollars when you think of some of the best places to wheel. thankyou for your support

Just wanted to let everyone know that we may have some sites and bunky cabins avail for Dixie Run. I have not gotten confirmation for a group that reserved these sites for this year, so call me and at least get put on the cancellation list for them. There are a few full hook up, a few water/electric and three bunk cabins.

Don't miss this one it may be the most important Dixie Run yet!

I will say that I have no desire to ride the trails and wait in line for hours to ride, but what kind of events does Crawfords offer for the dixie run. I love the campground and would be willing to drag my junk down there to see if I can make it out without breaking.

everyone keeps saying that but I never saw it. granted I've never been to every Dixie Run but there was plenty of room last year. true the others weren't closed yet but I still see it as a good event.

Everyone needs to remember it's more than just a trail ride but a huge fund raiser for Southern to help continue the fight to save what we have there. I hope to see the place slammed.

We still have a few full hooks and water/electic sites that have not been spoken for and several primitive sites. As far as we are concerned, the rock challenge is still set for Friday and I will be cooking lunch out there as well, so bring the appetites. Never know, Trout may be on the Menu. I am also planning to put on a bon fire Friday night, so bring the marshmallows and a long stick. knowing what most of you guys look like in the morning is scary enough, just picture no eyebrows or hair.HAha.

We are still planning the 2nd Annual Spring Fling as well. So keep that in mind. We are anticipating that the entire park is open and all trails next year if everything goes well with the legal action. I have even put in a special request to Mother Nature, to keep the rain away!

Which brings home the point that Dixie Run, Spring Fling and GMSTR are some of the largest fundraisers for SFWDA. Keep the trails open and support the fight. We will have a great time no matter what!

Still have room for more!

Just wanted everyone to know that we still have room for Dixie Run 2008. It is important that we have a huge showing of support for SWFDA as well as to let the FS see that we are up for the fight! Come on out for a few days and have a good time. This is an opportunity to stay involved.

Upper 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and of course 1. That gives you Guardrail, Heli Pad (and V-notch), and Schoolbus for the hardcore crowd.

I am not sure what the actual registered numbers are looking like, but the campground is filling up. It will probably look pretty close to last year. I know SFWDA is going to raffle off some more great prizes this year, don't want to miss that!
