Law enforcement at Tellico ohv?

What was the deal today? We went to the spring fling then cruised trail 1 and the open portion of 2. There were atleast 8 law enforcement/state/federal vehicles in the OHV area. 2 at the end of the open portion of 2, 4 in the NC paystation parking lot, 1 at the entrance to upper 2, and in the middle of trail 1. What exactly are the wasting my money for? I've never seen so much law enforcement there. Theres bars across all the trails so theres no chance of accidentally going trail riding.

I sent an email to the public affairs office asking what the deal was. Did they find a meth lab, pot field or what....couldnt be about all the OHV users who werent there.

On a side note. None of the trout fishermen returned my wave as I cruised the Tenn side of trail one. I went all the way to the water fall. Go figure.

I guess they took the key board rants to heart...I wonder how long they plan to hang out up there to show force?

Talked to Candice and some of the LEOs about 10p last night when we were headed back over from the Spring Fling. At that point they were all at Allen Gap. They were out making sure the internet tough guys weren't up to no good. With some of the over the top comments I've read here, who can blame them. Just wish they'd put that much effort into patrolling when the area was open.

They were out all day sat and were back this morning.

lol I wonder if they were out checking fishing lic's too. We joked about going fishing as well and I didnt see any LEO's over on the river. Guess it shows the bias pretty clear.

That's a different National Forest and a different set of LEOs...Nantahala (NC) vs. Cherokee (TN). I know you probably knew that, just pointing it out for those that don't. The two NFs are entirely separate.

All part of the irony. Just like the brook trout matter in NC but not in TN.

Exactly!! We were there earlier today and passed by at least 4 groups of LEOs just sitting around in their chairs...so is it just me, or is this a little ironic? First they close Tellico, taking revenue away from dozens of businesses and from the area itself, then they spend loads more paying these guys to basically hang out there?? How does that make sense? As chattfj40 said, why weren't these people there all along? How many times had you been to Tellico before and seen 3 Forest Service vehicles sitting at just Allen Gap alone? It just seems as though now it's convenient for them to be present, making others believe that the 4wheeling community has "forced them to police the area". Had they been there before, there would be no basis to their arguments because they would be WITNESSES to the fact that we are not a danger to the environment! Sorry about the rant....I just can't believe that Tellico could be gone forever just because of some trumped up nonsense.

welcome to politics.

It saddens me that Rep. Schuler won't take a stand.

Bingo. It's been said before, but it's worth repeating. There are lots of eyes on this board. Keep that in mind when you post.

Say hey to Tim Wilhelm, everybody.

Super duper clear bias. There were a lot more posts about going fishing with ape suits, being disruptive, etc. than posts about going trail riding. And it would be a lot easier to go fishing than trail riding. I know that NC and TN are seperate but if NC seriously thought crime would be commited on the TN side you dont think they would have called and coordinated. I dont think any LEO's look at a county/state border as a road block to justice. Maybe it shows that the NC FS had a chance to put on a show so now they'll get to state that they had x number of LEO's up there to enforce the closure.

Dear Mr. Mattson-

Thank you for your inquiry. We agree that there was an increased presence of Forest Service personnel in the Upper Tellico area last weekend. As many area visitors come from outside the area, such as yourself, we wanted to ensure that visitors were fully informed of the closure and had an opportunity to ask questions of personnel on site. In addition, we had received indications of potential for significant resource damage and vandalism in response to implementation of the temporary emergency closure. We are appreciative that that has not occurred to date.

LOL. BS. Once again. If there were "indications of potential" gleaned from the pirate discussions there would have been TN FS out in force too.
Besides, I'm not from out side the area, I'm 40 mins from the paystation on the NC side.

"potential for significant resource damage and vandalism in response to implementation of the temporary emergency closure"

Actually, I agree with her. I think there is potential for trouble. I hate to see it; it would be counter productive. But this isn't just another dirt road with a gate on it; this is Tellico. This is a whole nother ball game. There are many folks very attached to that place and I would guess that most of them believe they have been shit on, treated very unfairly and the two-year temporary closure is really just the first two years of the permanent Tellico closure. So, I really don't blame the FS for having additional rangers there for the normal opening day.

I think we should plan a trail ride for every day and see if they get tired.
