Q's about possible stolen hardtop HELP

Ok I recently got a hardtop from a cj I traded the guy straight up for my wheels and tires and softtop i thought i traded him from this website forum but i can find the info on because it was too long ago

This is what happened i was at the grocery store in a neighboring town from mine when i walk out side a marron tj is siting parked behind my jeep and the guy says that the top that i had on my jeep was his and the cops show up and one cop starts telling me how i need to take the top off and give it back to the guy and im like if its his top i have no prob giving it back (only because i recently got some 33s stolen from me and would expect the same)

BUT here is the guys evidence he says that what he called a scratch which was really where the paint on the top started flaking off on the side of the top so he knew it was his and it had a sticker on the back on the window which it had no evidence of being there now so the other cop shows up and ask the man if he has any papers or pics that proof that its his he replays no and the the cop ask him if u has a serial number and he replays no
so the second cop says that he can not forcable make me give the top up and then he ask the man if he has any thing else to add and what he said kindof pissed me right the hell off he goes well theres a cord in the back on the hardtop that goes to the back cargo light the cop looks in and sees it and then both cops agree that its plenty of evidence to give it back so he took a bunch of pics of it and says he has to what tell the detective (whos on Xmas break) to come back and then i can give the top back

so his anyone else every had of these thing called 9 10ths of the law is possesion

heres what it comes down to if he can prove its his i would he no prob giving it back but scratchs and a damm cord that every top his now come one does this sound a little silly to anyone other then me

email me or post back i really need help with this because there will be a det. calling me on monday im sure

email me at trx250rracer12@yahoo.com

you need to give the detective info on the guy you bought it from, simple enough. get the guy to prove where he got it, if he is a thief we all want him caught!

Well I would check with a jeep dealer and see if there is a serial number on the top somewhere and if so figure out how to break down the numbers to figure out where and when the top was produced and compare to the other guys vin number and such, and point out to the detective that any jeep top could have a scratch and all tops with a rear light will have a wire in it, that's just crazy that he could use that as evidence. And if its supposed to have a vin and doesnt anymore then I think you have your answer, and I admire you for your willingness to do whats right even though it would suck ass to have to give the top away as they are expensive but hey you gotta do what you gotta do, keep us posted on the results and good luck.

you bought it fair and square. unless the numbers match up, i dont think there is any evidence. i would tell him to take you to court and see what they think.

The proof that is belonged to this other guy is up to him to make......

the fact that you already have it means the 9/10's rule......

I'd definetly fight this, and get some date regarding his vin # and any dealer

info........ he might have bought his TJ with a factory softtop and no

hardtop at all......................

sounds fishy to me........

did he get a police report for the "stolen top" -? get a copy of that.

what about hard doors-??

CJ and TJ tops do not interchange. The windshield is at a much different angle. And the mounting hardware is different.

TJ tops to not have a locking latch on the rear glass.
TJ tops have only rear glass that pivots with a small amount of fibberglass at the bottom of the window.
TJ's have a huge wiring plug that goes into the rear of the top.
TJ hard top has 3 bolts per side under the rear windows.
TJ tops attach to the windshield with 2 clamps
See if his jeep has a rear defrost switch or rear wiper switch. Does your top have these?

CJ tops have fiberglass around the rear window that opens with the glass. If memory serves CJ and YJ tops have 4 bolts per side under the rear windows.
Also as previously mentioned CJ hardtops attach to the windshield with sheetmetal screws.

Hopefully something here will help.

maybe it's just me, but since it's your top I would go ahead and sell it. Then if the cops ever get ahold of you tell them it was stolen, let them try to prove it wasn't.

That's a joke that the guy was able to say their was a cord hanging down, and the cops said that was enough proof. He could have easily looked inside the jeep while you were inside the store and saw the cord.
