I dont know what to...zinc

Can someone please clear up exactly what the deal is with zinc additives and flat tapped cams. I know that it is important to use additives when the engine is being broken in, But now with nearly 5k miles on my rebuilt 1.3, Do i still have to put in a zinc additive now that zinc phosphate is no longer in conventional motoroils or is this all hubbub

Either run "offroad" Valvoline race oil that still has zinc in it or put zinc additive in with every change.

Every motor with a flat tappet cam needs zinc in the oil ALL THE TIME. Break in is just the most crucial point. Although you may get away with it for a long time, not having zinc in your oil will cause your cam and lifters to wear out prematurely.

What a second here, dose this mean I should also be putting some sort of zink additive in when I change oil also. I have never heard of this and have been in the automotive industry for years now. I also have a few flat tappet engines, never added anything to the oil and haven't had any issues.

I use the racing valvoline also and some say that the zinc will help keep a motor running if the engine starves for oil. I guess it bonds with the metal to make a coating. I'm not an engine builder and this is heard second hand to take it for what it is worth.

However, the racing valvoline doesn't have as much cleaning additives so frequent oil changes are needed.

Propaganda put out by the manufacturer. Of course they say you need this stuff. That is how they make their money.

Mobil 1 and Brad Penn racing oils have a high concentration of ZDDP. This is what is recommended in all Porsche, which have the same flat tappet camshaft issues.

I run diesel oil in my flat tappet stuff. Though it doesn't have as much as it used to, it has way more than the current pass car oil.
