My little pickup build
Hey guys, I have been reading and lurking around here for a long time finally decided to make a name. I have been slowly building my 83 suzuki samurai 410k. My dad purchased this thing in 88 and we have no clue where it came from my dad got tired of chasing parts so he decided to update it. When I was 15 I got it not knowing any better and ruined it. Anyways here are a few pictures of me fixing my mistakes this is the first swap I have done and really did not know much but I am overall pretty happy.
83 pickup with 86 engine, trans, t/c and now front axle, Yj SPOA swap, and a few others goodies. this is what is looked liked before I tore it apart ![]() it begins ![]() Frame extentions to relocate front shackle forward ![]() seat mount ![]() shackle mount plates

I realize the shackles are on wrong I am not using those and they were what I had
That is basically where it stands I spent today fixing some of the wiring issues that it has from years of being rigged together by my dad and his buddies, I finally got the turn signals working again. Started on the bumper will post pics later on of the progress on that. This thing is just gonna be a fun daily driver that I can cruise in the desert have not really been into the rock thing more of a go fast guy. Also I know these things are rare and hard to find parts for which is why most of it was updated, I would not be in this boat of doing this if I drove it like a normal kid and didnt jump it. I bent the axle and thats why I decided to go this way |

Still have the stock rear axle? Stock gear ratio would be 4.10, can't match up ratio's with the Samurai front axle. Samurai and SJ 410 thirds are not interchangeable. Just swap in a Samurai rear axle if you haven't done so already.

I am trying not to get to crazy with this just because they are rare, I bent the last axle jumping it and that sucked. I was impressed at how well the seats fit I have to bend the T/c shifter just a little bit so I can still run a shifter handle. I was hoping to have more room so I could make some time of center counsel/ cupholder thing but there is not much room left over. I finally got the turn signals working again and now I am working on the brake lights. I have been working long hours so stuff is limited to when my buddy comes over to help and the weekends.
Also the rear axle got switched to a 86 also. here is the start of the bumper ![]() another ![]() ![]() The bumper is not finished I am having a buddy help with it. The winch is gonna sit in the center and be pretty enclosed also in the frame horns we are gonna have out anchor points welded in place so we can tie our d rings and such. that is about where its at now. I should have more progress this week |

Looking forward to seeing this build progress there's some really nice work going into it! That bumper is similar to the sort of thing I want to build for mine
![]() The dropside pick ups are getting rare everywhere nowadays, there's 107 left and only 43 of those are actually on the road in the UK

I am pretty happy with it so far now we just need to figure out what we are gonna do for a turn signal having alot of ideas here. I am gonna try to get the winch so we can mount the winch plate and see how much room we actually have |

Thanks we werent sure how to do any of it at first we were gonna go with a bumper that had tubes all the way around the lights and then decided against that. I wanted something where the winch was hidden 100% the end outcome will have a hoop in the center with 2 hids and a 40 inch lightbar across the roof.
I have a few updates now we got the winch plate mounted but its just tacked I have to remove the shackle bushings to weld it in order not to melt them. ![]() ![]() The winch is totally below the bumper line other then the freespool lever, I am going to re clock the winch and hide that, I already moved the winch solenoid under the hood so its not all bulky looking. ![]() one more of the winch in black and white ![]() The winch plate is 1/4 inch thick with a 2 inch brake in the rear. I will probably weld a plate to the front, that winch plate was a jeep winch plate that I cut down. The front is going to have a skidplate and that is where the winch cable will come out. Sinch there was no more tubing and plate to finish the top time to figure out something for the rear. I had a brake light issue that was haunting me for years and I got it down to the light sockets. Since I dont have working reverse lights and removing the lights would leave the rear too open we decided to make a roll pan. Of course we used dimples. ![]() All this did was give me a excuse to cut off the rear bumper and build a new one. I figured I had to replace the lights anyways I might as well put in leds. g/f was not too happy because I told her I would leave the rear bumper as is for a while so we could drive it. If anyone is interested in that bumper I have a matching front one also idk wtf they came off of but they were welded solid to my samurai if not I will scrap them If anyone is curious on the size winch its a bulldog (china) 8k I know its overkill but why not I got a good deal on it from a local jeep shop Last edited by PJ11; 08-28-2012 at 08:39 PM. Looks good! Love seeing more of these getting located and built. Here's my version.... Got along way to go, its just literally resting on the axles, but should be buttoning up the suspension and swapping the motor in the next month, when I find some more wrenching time.

I like the look of your rig, I wish I went with toyota axles and 33's. Still un decided on what tires and what rims to put on this thing. I did get some work done this weekend but we had a huge storm that knocked out power for a day so I did not get a lot of pictures I will post what I have tho.
![]() Before the front skidplate mounts ![]() All welded up and painted ![]() And its out of the garage and turned around ![]() I moved it out and started to clean the garage, just as I was about to finish its started pouring rain and power went out. I pulled it back in and my phone died so I could not take any more pictures. I will update some more tomorrow. I have the winch all bolted into place now and figured out my wiring mess. I have to bolt on the skidplate and fairlead and top winch cover plate. I re clocked my engage/freespool handle and moved it towards the inside so I can hide the winch. Time to do the rear bumper |

Well I got a few updates, I had all weekend off but I had to help a friend all day saturday with his truck pressing in some bushings on his front end. I cant figure out my turn signal issue I tried 3 different flashers( Stock, EP34, and a electronic flasher) whenever I turn on my turn signals it just hums and does not blink it just stays on. If anyone has any help here I would like it. If I Put a stock 1157 light into the rear socket it blinks but in hyper mode as soon as I put the LED 1157 replacement it just stays on solid.
Anyways I got the brakes bled, Winch completely wired in, Rear brake lights and front lights all wired in, secured all the brake lines, got the exhaust welded in, Winch skidplate and fairlead on I hope I can start the rear bumper this week and finish all the little things. ![]() ![]() Here is just the brake lights I got this idea from someone else here they are way brighter then they look in this picture ![]() Here is the tail lights the inners are brakes the outers are turns ![]() Here is the winch solenoid under the hood ![]() Another shot of the fairlead and skidplate there are turn signals in the front but hard to see unless they are on ![]() My buddy works at a welding shop and made a custom stainless steel exhaust sounds pretty good ![]() This is the guy who made the exhaust we were just playing with the carb and letting it run for a while ![]() Thats all I have for now I am trying to get it ready for a run on oct 6th I finally drove it today so Its close now hope you guys like it |

I reallllllly like the looks of these trucks. What's your wheelbase? You put a lot of work into that front end, it came out looking great.

I have not measured the W/B I will do that tomorrow after work since I will be working on it. I didnt move the axles much I did not want the thing to look to funky with out having the tire flow in the wheel well. I also did not want to cut the fenders up front or more the rear ones. When I started this build I was just going to swap the axles and fix a few issues. I ended up going way over budget and doing a bunch more. I did not want to turn it into a full built crawler instead I wanted a fun d/d that I could beat up on and still hit some of the local stuff. Since I will be building a offroad Race truck this will be my cool little chase rig. I am going to start the rear bumper this weekend and then I can wheel it I have another list started for the 2nd wind of building it but I need to get it crusing for now. Thanks for the compliments on the bumper I am lucky to have a buddy who is a good hand and helped out.

A few more updates, I finally got the turn signals to blink. If anyone is wondering or runs into the problem where your turn signals turn on and they do not blink still follow ACKS write up and use the EP34 flasher and cut the signal and they will flash. I was not aware that this would fix the problem if they did not flash. I used LED lights both front and rear.
Here is the front winch plate cover, gonna be Dzues fastened on just for removal ![]() Front bumper shot ![]() Rear bumper started here is the lic plate mount ![]() Here is the mount with the top plate ![]() Rear bumper with tubes ![]() Here is the top shot ![]() this is it sitting on the truck obviously the other bumper will be gone lol ![]()
