Top speed with a carbed 8 valve?

So I've heard that to run freeway speeds I need the 16 valve but a guy I know has a carbed 8 valve and he says he can go 80 down the freeway with 38's on so what gives? What are your impressions of the 8valve motor and is it worth the hassle of dumping a EFI 16 valve motor in. Also anyone have problems with their carb? I know some carbs are a little more finiky than others. What is it like for rockcrawling? Thanks
erik

i all depends on what gears he has and what he's done with the motor

my dad has gone 95.4 mph acording to the gps the speedo said 90 and this with 33's and 6 to1 's with his 8 vavle 1.6
it was pushing 5 grand in 5th we could have gone faster

My top speed is about 55mph. I am sittin on 31's with stock gears and an 8v 1.3. It won't even pull 5th and it dosen't like 4th on a small incline. I plan to get a t case gear kit soon so that should help it a bit. Fortunately mine only sees road use in between mud holes. I don't think I would feel comfortable doin 80 in my zuke

GRS1 tcase + 5.38's + 33's = serious rpm for freeway action. And no, it's not photoshopped.. but the speedo is off about 8mph at that speed. GPS said 81mph.

Do the 1.6-16V. You'll be MUCH happier. I have 2 Zuks, 1w/8V and 33 inch tires and 1w/16V stock height. I can peg the speedo in the 16V - figure I'm doin' about 110mph. I can hit about 80 in the 8V on a looooong stretch.

My LWB Sam: 5.12s, stock engine with Aisin carb, stock t-case. I can pull 120-140 km/h all day if I want. We don't have the mountains that you west coasters do though.

SWB: 4.62s, header, Mikunnis, 31s. Point and shoot to any speed or gear until the engine over revs and blows up.

If you are starting with a clean sheet of paper go EFI 16V. That's what I'll be doing.

cool picture

81 mph and you are no where near redline that's great, you're just getting warmed up!

I'll have to try and dig up my pic

Moose- the rev limiters are handy things in the efi models

I have an 8-valve 1.6 with a VERY sick carburator. I have GRS3, 5.29's and 35's., and I can't get over 45 mph without flooring it, and if I hit the slightest little climb or headwind I have to floor it and still loose speed sometimes. But as I said, my carb is very sick. It is running super lean, and overheats (well, gets very hot anyway) even with a new 3-core radioator, new water pump, and new thermostat. As for wheeling at slow speeds/rpm's, it pulls very strong though. You almost can't stall the thing. Bobaki has the same engine setup with GRS2, 3.73's, and 32's and his rig is an absolute screamer. His runs so well that he gave me his EFI setup ( ) to use on my 8-valve and left his alone. I'll be installing the EFI next month.

I agree with Moose though. If you are starting from scratch, go with the 16 valve. If however, you already have an 8-valve, they run pretty strong with a good carb. Petroworks sells rebuilt carbs for $395. This is steep, but they have a bunch of electronic guts that probably can't be fixed by a do-it-yourselfer. I was quoted over $800 for a brand new carb

I will jump in since I was the one going 80 with 38s. I have 5.38s in the axles, GRSII tcase, and a little work on the 8v. I was going 80+ for hours on I5, verified by GPS. So ... One other thing about the 8v 1.6 is that you can smog it without a ref.... It is visually identical to the 1.3 if you run the carb. The only difference is the deck is 1" taller, and the 18 yr old at arco sure wont see that... I have smogged mine twice now, once at a gas staton, once at a test only station and passed both times with flying colors. It is true the 16v has more HP, but there is a lot of work to get it right, and a lot of hoops for us Cali guys to jump thru for EFI.

I drive a 16v 1.6 In my 95 tracker. Stock gearing (5.12 stock).

Stock T case, im not sure how far off my speedo is going from 215 - 31" tires. Im guessing 5-8 mph. I can pus 75 displayed if no headwind of hill, 5th is worthless on a hill.

It was my to my knowledge that T case did nothing for 2wd on road manners. Am I wrong?

Sammy tcases are underdriven 1.2 to 1 stock, lower for the super low tcase gears. I think the 6-1 cases are underdriven 1.6 to 1.....

I think stock high range is 1.4, 4.16 gears hi range is 1.58 reduction, I forget the 4.89, etc...

So, hi range, stock, effective "axle" ratio is 3.73*1.4=5.22, steeper than a tracker's stock hi range,

4.16 t-case gears: 3.73*1.58 (hi) =5.89, ...

That confuses me...

if I get the 4 to 1 T case gears it will increase my freeway performance?

Other than Changing my Diffs to 5.88 (calmini) from 5.12 (not a hell of a lot of difference) What are my options to increase my highway performance on the 1.6 16v.

I Have yet to do a 2 inch exhaust, i do however have the cold air intake made. Until I get a snorkle.

4 to 1 gears do not change the hi range ratio in a tracker case that I'm aware of, but they do in a Samurai case.
