Questions on fab of rocker guards

I was thinking about welding up a set of rocker guards for my zuk and I have some questions on how I shoud go about it. I was looking all over the internet for ideas and yes I did the search. I was wondering how rocky road outfitters can make their rocker guards completely bolt on. I dont really want to weld anything to my frame. I was wondering if any of you have pics of your rocker guard set ups for some more ideas. Thanks

its not hard, on the body mount wings there's ample space to drill and bolt. Schrock's are the same way. I'd go with his if I were you, amazing quality, they fit great and look great. They mount through the body and those mounting wings.

Some places it is illegal to weld to your frame. Not a big deal...unless you get caught

The ones that use the mounting wings sound good. The key is to remember that they don't need to transfer all the weight to the frame, just some. The rest can get spread to the rocker panel (the key being spread over the WHOLE rocker) and you won't dent anything.

You can always weld on a couple of bolts to make it look bolted on.

Shit, what state wont let you weld to your frame? I hope mine isn't one of them!!

I welded mine to the frame.

I first welded a piece of 1/4 inch plate to the frame and then welded black pipe to the plate.

Black pipe is hard and brittle, my thoughts were I would rather have the pipe break off on a hard hit, than stay attached to frame and twist the rails. More than likely it will break at the weld.

I haven't had any problems with them. When I do tear them off, I will probably just use angle iron and bolt it to the body.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was thinking of drilling on my frame. Im not sure if this is crazy. I was planning on drilling through the front body mount wing and on the rear through the the square bracket that supports the stationary end of the rear spring. Tell me now if this is crazy and will hurt the structural integrity of my rig. I was planning on drilling two holes in each. Any input would be great. Thanks

My idea was to put 3/16" steel 90 angle 3x3 inches directly on the rocker.

But I'm working on figuring how and where to bolt it..

any suggestions?

I originally did that with 4x4, 1/4 inch diamond plate and it worked very well spreading the weight along the the body from wheel well to wheel well for a couple of years until the day I dropped down HARD right behind the front wheel. It bent the bottom of my tub up about 1-2 inches leading back and tapering off about the middle of my door. I had to beat the sh!t out of my door jam to fit my door back on. Needless to say I have since ran 2 inch hitch tube along the body mounts to the frame.

redzook--or anybody with his idea have any pics---sounds like a good idea--

I assume that you cut the rockers to the botton on the floor, then simply put some 4x4 angle on---am even close??

He tooks 2x4 tubing 3/16 thick to replace his rocker. He welded them flush with the floor on the 4 inches side.

Yeah it worked great for me too. Just wait until you slip off a rock and land hard on them. Like me....LOL Jacking it up and slamming down on a rock are worlds apart.

This way is not as strong but the clearance you get is great. After a few years of beating on the truck, the rockers are pretty foul, but so is the rest of the truck. If I had a to do over I would fully weld the angle to the sheetmetal instead of just stitching it.

Here is some awesome info/thread on the the zuwharrie.com forum on making some sturdy & good looking rockers w/ boxed material. They fill up the void after cutting out the damaged/rusty lower rocker panels.(http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/top...058d48392c7eaa)

But for some reason, the pics don't pull up for me any more? Perhaps, can ask them to e-mail them to you or repost them.

I think 3/16 is way enough!
1/4 is overkill and HEAVY

I'll go with 3/16 thick and 3x3
