Question You guys happy with your 16 valve???

As some of you may know, I'm in the "process" of doing the 4.3L swap. I used quotations because it's been a SLOW process and frustrating at times too. I'm looking to do this right, no ghetto BS, so it's costing quite a bit of $$$. And frankly, too much. This isn't my only ride and it isn't worth the $$$ it's going to take to do the 4.3L, so here we go: for those who have the 16 valve, are you satisfied with the results?

I'm going to be on the highway a lot with this rig so it's imortant that I can get up to 70-75 no problem. And not having it slow down to a crawl when I hit a small hill or headwind. Would the 16 valve prevent these issues?
I'll be running 33's, with Toy axles, and it will be geared to near stock figures. Maybe even taller. Any tips/grievances you have with your 16V, let me know. I don't want to drop this 4.3L to be left with a snail ride. I know, I'm not expecting to win any races, just want a capable rig off and ON road. Thanks for the help guys.

Cheers,
Steve

Could you elaborate? What's costing so much money and time with the 4.3 swap?

Thanks.

Any motor swap that is not a simpe bolt on gets expensive. Regardless of what some people may claim.

I built all of my own stuff, and basically got my motor for free, but I have a lot of money wrapped up in my swap. Cheap compared to what some spend though!

To stay on topic, I do not know that you will be 100% happy with a 16 valve on 35s doing 75mph. You will still be slowing down on hills, but you will be a lot better then stock. You will need to pay close attention to the gearing to go that fast without turning to many RPMs, yet be able to start those 35's rolling without slipping the clutch much.

I couldn't be happier with the multi-port 16 valve motor. I've always looked at building a capable vehicle as a balance. Once you go big...well, you have to go big. The 1.6L motor is within 20 lbs of the 1.3 so there's little downside to doing the swap. Take the 60-64HP of the 1.3 and up it to 95HP for a 20# penalty and I'll take it. Throw in multi-port fuel injection and more torque and I'm a happy 4-wheeler. I regularly run 80 MPH on my daily commute to the office and if I push it on the flats, it'll hit 90.

I'm running 31" tires on Sammy axles...4.62 R&P's with the GRS1 t-case.

Here's the rig the week the engine went in (Pre-spring over):

What's costing money? LOL Well, here's a list of a few things I can think of:
- the SLE for the NP241 was a bit of coin $350 or so
- the aftermarket gauges because I'll now be running a VSS with the transfer case
- rebuilding the engine with performance parts (ie. bore over, pistons, cam, etc.)
- getting the comp reprogrammed
- hydraulic clutch linkage
- re-running fuel lines with HP lines
- building a new, larger gas tank (not a cost issue as the metal will be cut and supplied for free; rather a time issue)
- panhard bar that I would be using if it was a 16 valve

There are A LOT of little things too that I can't bother mentioning. I could just use the engine as is (it ran fine, just a bit dirty) but I figure since it's out, I may as well build it. And build it I will with 0.030 over Silvolite pistons, Comp cam, and programming to be done by Rooster at PCMforless (these guys are great and do a lot of the programming for my F-body [Trans Am/Camaro] crew).

As I sit here now, it's still the 4.3L going in. When I think about how happy I'll be with all that power under my foot, it'll be worth it. Just hard to stay motivated now. Seems so far away; guess I just need to get off my ass and get going! I've already bought a lot of parts (ie. high flow water pump, disty, wires, harness, rebuilt the transfer case, blah, blah, blah). I'll keep ya'll posted...

Cheers,
Steve

honestly i was not happy with mine... it lacked power, lacked torque, and lacked the ability to hold any kind of speed...

i'm 100x happier with my V6

Smoked a V8 Cruiser....OK, what was it....A FORD! LOL That I could believe

If this rig with the 4.3L ever smokes my LT1 Trans Am, I'd be impressed. Anyway, it looks like I've lost interest in the 16 valve. The 4.3L just seems like too good of an opportunity to pass up on, especially since the work is partly done already. Back to wrenching in a couple weeks

Cheers,
Steve

I currenty have the 16V with 5.29's, a 4:1 case and 33 swampers which are almost 34" tall.

I dont know how fast it will go, but it is a hell of a lot faster than I ever felt safe going. I'm about 1/2" throttle at 65mph and about 4500rpm. It has never slowed on any kind of incline. I rarely drive it on the street anymore since the windshield, targa doors etc are never on though.

It feels plenty zippy on the street. The only beef I have with it is that stalls pretty easily offroad. I just need some lower gears I think. I've also heard that the smaller 1.3 flywheel doesnt help much in this regard.

37's and a lot more gears are in the works. Havent decided on what way I'm going to go on the gearing.

Suzuki manufacture the motor for Geo which was purchased by Chevy. I have a hard time believing that Chevy builds the motors. I am sure Suzuki is the one that builds them.
